I'd be interested in the certification, or more strictly, the syllabus and standards to be achieved. It's to ensure that my teaching hasn't missed something out, or let substandard practices persist.

It's also to overcome any over-protective instincts we may have, asserting that the kids aren't competent enough to play in traffic when, objectively, they are sufficiently competent.

@Bikeability - if you care to name your preference of time (either block, or timeslot for a set of days), I'll match that and pop it into the children's diary. At a glance, any day, except Thursday morning (20th). I may even be able to borrow some kit from the local school cluster...

Cool, I'll watch the thread. If you find a venue and sort a date, and if I'm free I can join you to help out.

I think it is more skills than certification.

It depends on what sort of training you want SRD. I've assisted on two years of BA now. If you're after a certification then I can't help. But if you're more interested in training to teach the skills needed for safer cycling on roads, without any certification, then I can help.

Depends what you feel is more important, skills and knowledge to enable children to cycle on our roads, or just a certificate to prove they undertook the training.

As for insurance, I've got some with my British Cycling Ride Leader membership, which requires me to be "paid", no matter how nominally!

Sounds to me as though depending on timing etc, we could easily have 10 kids interested.

Would a trainer like to a) suggest what his/her fee for something like that might be? B) what sort of a schedule would work? Could we do an intensive one day session? Or would it need to be more to be effective? (I'm assuming that most of the kids would already have so e experience) and b) how many additional helpers might be required (either volunteer or paid?

Am assuming trainer would have insurance? (Not sure how that works)

I'm interested for my brood, and am an assistant cycle trainer, so can assist (as might be expected!), but would need a trainer to run a Bikeability course.

I'm also a British Cycling Ride Leader and Route Designer, so I can risk assess and lead a (non-training) ride.

There's some "abandoned" roads (Niddrie Mains, etc) near to the Innocent Railway, but really interaction with traffic is required for level 2 onwards, so any 20 mph estate is likely to be reasonable.

I'd be interested in principle. Larger of the two small Greenroofers is in this age bracket and has no formal training in cycling on the road.

I'm a certified Cycling Scotland Essential Cycling Skills trainer, but I've no experience of teaching children and can't offer anything official.

One place the Greenroofer family has found good for cycle training is Craighouse. Now the site is closed to traffic there are two car parks that are quite good for skills training with a small audience (although a bit slopy), and it's just occurred to me that you could use the site roads for traffic-free practice of junctions and starting off and stuff (although we never have).

Had a school mum ask me about cycle training for their 7 year old, who is starting to cycle more on the road with them. We've discussed this before, and my recollection is that there were some trainers out there who were willing to organise a course. And other parents of similarly aged kids who were interested in joining in.

If we were to think about organising some training over the half-term, what would we need? I think our last attempt to plan this failed for lack of a plausible site.

If anyone else is interested please let me know - especially is anyone has qualifications etc to offer the training and wants to try and set something up.
