Interesting about £34,600 for a Toucan crossing on Balgreen Road.

Because the workman I spoke to said it was going to be a Pelican crossing.

Hopefully he's wrong.

Continuing the lights on the canal towpath to wester hailes is a good thing. a fair number of poles now have the bolted on double diamond brackets that make fastening your bike easier

Some more racks appearing around the place.

Whilst not enough, I am just trying to accentuate the positive

My attempt at a diagram looks ok when I have typed the spaces in the box but when actually posted it doesn't work.

So £1400 of cycling cash was spent on the stupid bloody gate chicanes on Crawford Bridge, which amounts to a fair chunk of the cycling spend in Leith Walk ward this year.

This is a facility that actually discourages cycling*. I don't remember seeing anything in CAPS about investing in these type of 'improvements'.

So I'm not going to congratulate the council for this.

*- I xame off trying to negotiate one of the gates last week (uphill, heavy panniers).

IF you want to write to them to say that you are glad that CEC is spending money in your/their ward you might as well send an email to them all.

You may or may not just want to send to one (or more) for personal or party reasons.

If there is an issue on your commute the same applies. Some councillors take the attitude that 'you are not one of my constituents so I can't help you'.

You could also write to one or more councillors on the Transport committee.

I found the whole councillor ward thing totally confusing. Even if the issue was in the ward in which I live, with multiple councillors per ward I wouldn't know who to write to about it. And most of the time the issue is in another ward anyway. Advice please ?

Current financial year (to April).

So, done, about to be or perhaps running over to 'next year'.

Dunno about the "by ward" thing, but it is useful/interesting to see what they are proposing...?

e.g. "NCN1 - Golf course path: Widen, resurface and edge marking" - if that is where I think it is, that's a useful improvement to the cycle route.

Though, thinking about it further as I type, is this past or future or both?

"Also is creating this sort of spreadsheet the best use of cycling officer time?"

Suspect it wasn't done by cycling officer, also think CEC is already ITed up such that things can be split by ward by asking right questions.

"Most wards are pretty small compared to most journeys, and on your trip to shops, work, cinema etc you are likely to pass through several wards."

All true, but one 'problem' mentioned by some councillors is that other councillors aren't all in favour of 'spending on cycling'.

This may be because they (simply) have parochial views. At least this shows what money is (or isn't) being spent in their area.

SOME might decide it's 'a waste of money', but I would hope they might take a bit more interest.

Fascinating, yes. Useful, I'm not so sure.

Most wards are pretty small compared to most journeys, and on your trip to shops, work, cinema etc you are likely to pass through several wards.

I live in Linlithgow but would prefer cycling cash spent on a decent Princes St cycleroute than in my own ward [and that is in a different council, not just different ward!]

I can see councillors arguing that, for equity, their ward should get more funding, even though the overall need and/or potential demand is much greater elsewhere.

Also is creating this sort of spreadsheet the best use of cycling officer time? - though I imagine it was requested by a councillor so they had to do it.

Fascinating spreadsheet of expected capital expenditure (in the current financial year) on cycle infrastructure broken down by ward.

Useful for councillors to know how their ward is benefiting (or not - SURELY there is some infrastructure improvement in Colinton/Fairmilehead ward??) from the council's cycle budget.

Useful for people in those wards to tell their councillors that they welcome this investment - and perhaps suggest other things that need improving - and of course maintaining.
