DOCKSIDE HOMES: Forth Ports been given the go-ahead to build up to 250 homes on the dockside near the First Stage film studio in Leith. The four blocks of up to six storeys will feature one, two and three-bedroom apartments, including a third classed as affordable, as part of the wider Harbour 31 masterplan. The development plans also include a Bath Street to Ocean Way bus route, cycle lane and footpath connecting the site to wider developments of Leith docks.

The food is overpriced and terrible. I suggested via their website that they should consider doing bacon rolls but I got a 'we know what we're doing response' back.

@Stickman - The Pitt getting good reviews tho some feel pricey for Granton. The proprietor of the cafe is called Fast Eddie. He dont like bike lanes. Indeed he followed us into the side street when we were campaigning with weans to save the Kingsknowe lane in his big motor and was peeved when he couldnt get out. I thought he lived in the street but apparently just real life trolling.

@Stickman - I don't know who owns it, but it apparently hasn't changed hands in over 10 years: https://scotlis.ros.gov.uk/property-summary/MID64622/1

Additionally, I noticed TripAdvisor saying "#294 of 324 Coffee & Tea Spots in Edinburgh" and got curious about numbers 295 through 324. It turns out that TripAdvisor includes locations which haven't been rated/reviewed in those 324 and, as far as I can tell, Boardwalk is the lowest rated of all cafes which anyone has rated/reviewed.

The reviews on Google aren't great either.

(And that's not the only Reddit thread critical of the place.)

Fuerzabruta was in a tent opposite Ocean Ternimal, though that was possibly Fringe rather than EIF. Faust was in one of the exhibition halls at the Ingliston RHC, which was non-central but less convenient to get to, though at least I still lived in the city centre and only needed one bus.

When I was a boy we used to play on the abandoned railways around 5-ways, and the abutments for the east-west bridge were still there although the bridge was long gone at that point. Great fun for climbing. It was overgrown to the point of being impenetrable and you certainly had to watch out for dubious characters roaming around.

gembo, that is the right 5 ways. If you have never taken the route north to the shore the I suggest a quick exploration. It's not a long path and shortly after leaving 5 ways it heads into the Trinity Tunnel.

fimm, Five ways is indeed closer to Leith. It is this junction:

https://www.openstreetmap.org/#map=18/55.97413/-3.20265
It's the junction between Chancealot, Goldenacre, Trinity, Ferry Road and Hawthorvale paths. (Although I'll confess to not having known all those names before)

My five ways is chance lot and goldenacre paths meeting the leith to d mains line (which is two of the five) and the fifth being the line north to the shore. But thinking thus thru that is east of Granton by a good bit.

“So unsurprisingly five ways was the branchline junction”

Not as such.

Two lines crossed here, one was on a bridge.

This was removed and major earthworks ensued to make Five Ways. (Which is why the slope towards the tunnel is so steep.)

The junction was where the lines from Scotland Yard and the line through Powderhall joined and continued to Granton.

So unsurprisingly five ways was the branchline junction and the line is obvious as it is the cycle path to silver knowes, ending round the back of Tesco at d mains

Crammond has historically been a weekend holiday destination (miss Jean Brodie etc). The walk by the river down to the path to the island is well promenaded. But was the prom along to granton ever a place of Victorian promenading?

I was down at Granton campus the other day and the plans to create 4000 houses there continue also national gallery and museum outposts.

He has put forward the idea as part of a drive to revive efforts to create a continuous high-quality promenade to help link the shoreline communities of Cramond, Silverknowes, Granton and Leith.

"Eddie Tait, who opened the Boardwalk Beach Club cafe in Marine Drive, Silverknowes, in 2016 – its name inspired by Sir Terry’s proposal – wants to create a botanical garden on the foreshore and bring back playing fields on Gyspy Brae.

@chdot: Glad the bay never got filled in!

Amen to that. These days it's part of the Firth of Forth SSSI/SPA and a Ramsar designated site.

The latter designation is derived from the Ramsar Convention, an international treaty for the conservation and sustainable use of "Wetlands of International Importance especially as Waterfowl Habitat". Not bad for a suburb of Edinburgh.

(Edinburgh also has the smallest SPA in Scotland: Imperial Dock Lock in Leith. It only covers around 1,000 square metres, but it is home to one of the UK’s biggest common tern colonies.)
