@Kim - do you happen to have the reference, for those that have access to academic subscriptions...

The author may also have released their draft in an open format.

"The cycle training was not effective in increasing levels of cycling to school."

Not surprising really, though there is probably an assumption (by some people) that one will lead to the other.

The fact that this study shows that it does improve skills - and that that knowledge/achievement is retained is very good news and validates training.

Whether the current training available is 'optimum' is another question.

BUT it also clearly demonstrates that there is a lot more to getting kids to (be allowed to) cycle to school - eg lower speeds, better enforcement, 'safe routes', cycle parking and (not least) encouraging attitudes of school staff (especially Head Teachers).

That's because the training is just one key element of what is required.

Other elements include having a safe route to the school to cycle on. Parents who give a toss and are prepared to cycle with them for a while.

All the skillz in the world are useless without these...

There is a new paper in Accident Analysis & Prevention: Effects of a cycle training course on children's cycling skills and levels of cycling to school.

The highlights of this paper are:

Short- and longer-term effects of a cycle training were examined.

The cycle training was effective in improving children's cycling skills.

Improvements in cycling skills were maintained five months later.

The cycle training was not effective in increasing levels of cycling to school.

Improving cycling skills and changing cycling behaviour are two different concepts.
