Take the 28% with a pinch of salt. It's usually a judgement call by those institutionally prejudiced against cyclists.

And, also from Kaputnik's link:
"For all incidents resulting in serious injury to [cyclists] 72% of contributory factors were assigned to the other vehicle driver and 28% to the [cyclist]"

From http://streetsaheadedinburgh.org.uk/info/2/cyclists/79/road_safety_statistics

Table 6.5, 16 of 210 cyclist KSI reports in Edinburgh 2004-2010 involved no other vehicle.

So, 93% of cyclist KSIs were caused by another, motorised vehicle.

The Audax mag Arrivee gives an annual table of accidents recorded during events. Of 60 incidents only one seemed to involve a car. One involved tea.

A colleague was saying how dangerous cyclig was and how they would never get on a bike. I made the usual point that cycling itself isn't a dangerous activity, it's the interaction with motor vehicles that is the problem.

That got me wondering, are there any statistics for bike "incidents" where no vehicle was involved? I'm particularly interested in everyday cycling, not mountain biking or road racing.
