A lot of emotion on display from Nairn in the Leeds to Scotland doc.</p> <p>Particularly of note was the state of the Settle-Carlisle railway back then and the disaster that was Carlisle city centre, which was basically dominated by cars and buses on expanses of tarmac. Nairn not impressed. I've got early memories of the city like that. Happily, the city centre was pedestrianised in 1989 and, guess what, it's much nicer. It's actually feels like a place now. I'd never heard of him either, but I was only a kid when he was broadcasting so was probably watching Monty Python's Flying Circus or Spike Milligna's Q series instead...</p> <p>Nairn railing against the car culture was a sight to behold. He seemed very fond of his Morris Minor though so not beyond contradiction...</p> <p>Another interesting clip last night on an earlier programme was Richard Rogers cycling to work in London (sometime in the 1980s).
