Really enjoyed both programmes. A lot of emotion on display from Nairn in the Leeds to Scotland doc.

Particularly of note was the state of the Settle-Carlisle railway back then and the disaster that was Carlisle city centre, which was basically dominated by cars and buses on expanses of tarmac. Nairn not impressed. I've got early memories of the city like that. Happily, the city centre was pedestrianised in 1989 and, guess what, it's much nicer. It's actually feels like a place now. People shop there and everything.

Tickled by the camera work being credited to Bob Sleigh as well. :)

Newcastle was one of Ian Nairn's favourite places.

There seemed to be an overlap between places with decent beer and architecture he liked. He did deliver his views with great passion although it seems odd now in the era of 'cool' presentations.

One bit filmed at Riccarton junction on Waverley line... worth watching for the retro colour and delivery/editing,

Narrated by Bill Paterson.

Odd. It wasn't behind a wall when I read it this morning. Try searching for "Richard Rogers on a bike": that's how I found it, and the video interview played just fine.

Yes, I watched the doc on him last night: great stuff. I'd never heard of him either, but I was only a kid when he was broadcasting so was probably watching Monty Python's Flying Circus or Spike Milligna's Q series instead...

Nairn railing against the car culture was a sight to behold. He seemed very fond of his Morris Minor though so not beyond contradiction...

Another interesting clip last night on an earlier programme was Richard Rogers cycling to work in London (sometime in the 1980s). Shirt sleeves, no safety/hi viz gear, couple of battered Karrimor panniers on the back, wide north road handlebars.

Thanks for the reminder. I saw that it and the doc on Nairn were on, but failed to remember to watch either.

Jonathan Meades has always spoken very highly of Ian Nairn, which is good enough recommendation for me.

Discovered this last night. You lot probably know all about it.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/p01rwh55/Nairn_Across_Britain_From_Leeds_into_Scotland/

If not, worth a watch.

There was a fascinating documentary on Nairn on BBC 4, but not on iplayer yet.

I'd never even heard of him (remember, I'm a colonial). Now I want to read his books.
