In France last year we picked MONSTER ceps. Fab they were.

The only organised walks I know of are by V&C. If anyone has places they think likely that are easily accessible by bike (or has a car), I would be happy to do some rambles in the autumn.

Have been picking them since I was eight, so happy to show others. I can identify a few others (mainly the really poisonous ones), but won't eat anything else.

We used to go out picking, everyone in the family with 2 plastic carrier bags which we filled about half-full (any more and they get squished). Then my folks moved out of town, and now we pick a mixing bowl full every couple of days. But have never seen them in such quantities in Scotland.

I've been on a couple of V&C fungi forays which are great fun - on hols this year though when they happen.

I'm often accused of being a food snob (the last time was just on Wednesday night there...) but I see nothing wrong with only wanting to eat stuff that's good quality and fresh and not pumped with all sorts of additives and so on.

Is this a tangent?

I went to one food festival thingy in Edinburgh a few years ago (Taste?) and it was intensely uninspiring.

We found chanterelles on holiday a couple of weeks ago. I'm not saying where though! This was the first time I have tried them and they are delicious. I can see what the fuss is about now.

Keep thinking this should be a good year for chanterelles, but haven't seen many yet. On the up side I do know a friendly smallholder who is happy to sell me a whole wether lamb or half a bullock. Haven't managed to persuade him to take up pig keeping yet though. I have another fiend who wants to find a wee bit of land to rent and keep a couple of pigs, but his wife won't let him...

Chanterelles pretty difficult to confuse with anything else, but always good to get someone knowledgeable to go out with you first time.

If you do get some, clean, half and fry in butter. they freeze well too.

"All you need is Margo and Tom round for a drink !"?

Am feeling pretty self-sufficient at the moment - local fresh cod from a neighbour, labrador caribou from a friend's father, own-picked fresh berries for breakfast and last years ones in jam and puddings at every other meal. fresh veg from garden, home-made bread, cookies (biscuits), mushrooms from the woods behind the house. haven't managed to catch any trout yet, but am trying.

that reminds me...Laidback - is it red currant jelly or black currant jam that you prefer?

farmers markets way to go ! I work for a major supermarket but ! My son has just about got to grips with .22 air rifle, and he can skin a rabbit about as fast as me !Rabbits, fish, wild veg, this coubtry has it all, just get out and try it !Monoblock drives, rip em up and build raised beds, real veg, washed in tap water,on a bit of bread youve baked yourself !
All you need is Margo and Tom round for a drink !The time you spend on waxing the car could make you almost self sufficient. OK if you know a freindly farmer who will sell you a whole lamb or half a pig then your made.
Havnt tried crows or other corvin but understand that they are ........ok......ish !

dunno. i'm as 'foodie' as they get, but this sort of slick management style just puts me off. have never been and have surprisingly little interest in attending.

how 'bout in September, we meet at the farmer's market, i'll talk you through all the stalls and suggest recipes?

Heck, i'll even take stuff home and cook it with/for you. that's more my style :)
