I noticed yesterday evening that they have moved the long-standing 1 tonne yellow concrete blocks at the Waride end of the McKelvie Parade and a big "cyclists turn left" arrow has appeared at the drop kerb. Of course you have to make this slow, right-angle turn with a stream of traffic up your tail trying to force you to cycle at 30mph because the road is too narrow and busy for anyone to pass.

I've tried it in all directions now. Emerging from the Trinity path/tunnel direction then heading east was the strangest, as the ped crossing is split into two signal-linked chunks, so if you're going right you're best off taking the rightmost channel of footway, which isn't as heavily shared-use-marked-up (AFAI recall - need to check footage). I saw some possibly-tourist-people (or at least non-habitual-that-bit-of-path-users) doing lots of puzzled peering-about in order to get from the west (along the road, not McKelvie Parade) to Trinity Road, who I think ended up getting off and walking during pedestrian green rather than joining the footway and cycling across as if to get to the tunnel/path.

What is more likely to happen is that the bit off grass beyond the west end of McKelvie Parade would be converted to car parking so that traffic in both directions can try and go too fast, rather than whichever direction reaches the parked-vehicle-derived narrowing first and shoulders through.

My camera wasn't working on my way home last night but it's worth remembering that the New Cycle Lane going east around the new bend has three parking spaces on the inside of it, to ameliorate the removal of parking-area against the south pavement. Don't worry - there's a foot-wide door-buffer zone included.

"What would be useful is if there were an adjacent piece of unused land which could be used to house a high quality cycle/footway."

Would help if CEC actually owned all that land.

Even then it probably wouldn't be a "priority".

It's not as though the local residents haven't been complaining/campaigning for YEARS!

"

that road is deliberately excluded from 20mph proposals.

From that chipwrapper article;

The removal of a double bend is to be completed this week in a bid to reduce the accident rate.

I thought that was all about removing the "traffic bottleneck" with some improvements also to the pedestrian / cycle crossing. It should be fairly hard to crash on such a slow bend with barriers and single direction operation controlled by lights, even for Edinburgh's finest drivists.

However, Tory councillor Allan Jackson said some residents believe the road still needs to be widened at the west end between Wardie Steps and Granton Square where the greatest danger lies

Yes, that will really help Cllr. Jackson. The road is already wide and straight. Widening it further will achieve what exactly apart from encouraging an increase in speed. While we're at it, let's dig a big hole in which you can stick your head.

There's a bit more paint down now. After you exit McKelvie to go east there's a short stretch of gappy (give way to peds at the crossing) shared-use bit which just goes as far as the point where westbound traffic's stop line used to be. Unfortunately it doesn't go as far as the point where westbound traffic is being stopped whilst the work is ongoing.

McKelvie Parade usable again. Road still three-way-signalled.

That shared use path is horribly bobbly as well, IIRC. Would be good if they laid it properly as part of your join-up strategy, chdot.

"I never use the path anyway as it leads to a dead end."

You mean McKelvie Parade?

I never use the path anyway as it leads to a dead end. Just wait for a gap and cycle towards Granton. I usually get to the gyratory before traffic catches me.

"That last picture looks like they're changing the road layout (possibly getting rid of the traffic lights?)"

But I don't know if that's what's happening yet

Photos from 3 weeks ago show big pipes, there were Scottish Water signs.

Plans below (click for PDFs) show what is due to happen (was told 'May'.)

Will be cycle/ped crossing to McKelvie Parade. All looks a bit convoluted!
