Try one of your local councillors - or Leslie Hinds (via Twitter often gets her to react).

Seeing as we're on the subject of trade waste, has anyone any suggestions as to how to get the council to collect ours? I've been chasing them through the normal channels for about 2 months with no success... Aware this is slightly off topic but suspect (hope!) someone on here will have some useful suggestions.

As a follow-up to my last post about Murieston Crescent...

Yes, one of the smaller bins has been getting left on the extended pavement. No wonder it's been more dangerous there! It's entirely overdue that the whole Murieston layout was made one way anyway. It's far too narrow for the amount of parking (and bins!) on the streets.

Talking of big bins in bad places:

http://goo.gl/maps/0w6Ix

Thanks to these, I was close to being over the bonnet of a silver hatchback, driven by an only partially-aware elderly woman who decided to lurch out of Murieston Terrace instead of steadily edging till she could see if there was anything coming. I called through her open window that she needs to be more aware that she can't see what's coming from behind the bins.

No way should those be located at the corner. Worse still, I think the bins were sticking outside the painted area as there was more of a visual obstruction than that (I'm even wondering if there was a bin on the pavement itself when I think about it but I was more concerned with stopping before a collision occurred). IMO, the parking bays should be where the bins are and the bins moved midway between that corner and Dalry Rd junction. better still, of course, is that the corner should be kept totally clear of obstruction.

how about a picture of the bins blocking the pavement by the jet garage on Bruntsfield place? huge amounts of room there, but bins all on top of pavement.

didn;t have camera with me, so didn't get a pic.

Leith Walk has around 60% less trade waste bins on the street since the start of the Council's trade waste pilot.

I'm guessing the blue bins outside Malones are the ones with the empty bottles from St Patrick's day last Monday ...;-)

I'm old enough to remember Forrest Road when it was three full lanes of traffic, before the pavements were built out. The pavements were regularly almost blocked by enormous piles of rubbish bags on bin day. Bike racks and bike lanes, obviously, didn't exist. What's there now is definitely an improvement - but there surely has to be a better way still...

PS I quite like that fixie...

A fine collection of interesting bikes too. There's a cargo bike in the second picture and there's something that might* be a triumph of style over substance in the final picture.

---
*Clearly, if it's your bike with the gold rims, then you are welcome to reassure me that it is both style and substance.

Perhaps, in granting consent for a particular use of a building the planning department should make it essential for refuse collection arrangements to be managed from within the curtilage of the building and associated grounds, rather than poaching space from the road, provided for the passing & repassing of traffic, and impeding that function (s.129(2)?)

BINS!!!!

Normally I get through Forrest Road as fast as possible

- making allowance for stray pedestrians, traffic from the right and vans parked in the cycle lane.

Yesterday I stopped to shop (for a single item).

I've never seen so many bins in such a short space of time.

Perhaps after they have sorted out Rose Street...

http://www.edinburghnews.scotsman.com/news/rose-street-alleys-back-to-life-as-trade-bins-gone-1-3345879

Problem of bins on Rose St and surrounding lanes improved because...

"in January traders and restaurateurs agreed to leave containers for collection in tight one-hour windows three times a week, creating an expanse of cobble stoned pathways instead of rubbish-strewn alleys."

So I'm guessing that they are now using smaller bins which can be stored off street?

One of the comment sunder the article is quite interesting: from a rubbish truck driver who points out how difficult it is to clear the street within the allocated window due to other delivery vehicles getting in the way.
