I was back in Edinburgh a couple of weeks ago, both driving and walking around the New Town, Broughton and Leith Walk areas, for the first time in a while. It really struck me how many people there were on bikes, seemingly more than ever. It struck me even more that a decent percentage of these were female. Still by no means a majority but getting nearer to an even split.

I cycle into and around Manchester from time to time and I would say the gender balance in Edinburgh is much more even than Manchester. Purely based on my own unscientific observations of course...

"changing rooms in my place can get incredibly busy first thing"

Demand more changing rooms!

Or encourage people who might not regard the journey to work as a chance for a 'workout'.

As long as people have basic fitness (and a suitable bike), and don't feel the need to 'race' 'showers at work' shouldn't be necessary.

People who could/do walk to work aren't put off because they'd have to run and get changed.

I am rarely the only female cyclist at junctions. Often men are in the minority, and there are 2 or 3 women.

Interesting piece.

Oddly enough, it was only last week that I was thinking that there were more - a lot more - female cyclists around Edinburgh this year.

I wasnt sure if that is only because of where I live (big student populations etc) but no - there are a lot more on my commute too.

Used to be that pretty much all commuters in my office were men, but now there are at least 2-3 regular female cyclists too.

That might not sound much, but its a good start. I have regularly spoken to women in my office who bemoan opportunities to 'do fitness' and asked them why they dont cycle to work - most cite the 'hassle' factor and that it takes too long to get ready in communal changing rooms in he morning.

I can kind of get that - even the male changing rooms in my place can get incredibly busy first thing.
