And yet.....(spotted on Twitter):

Lesley Riddoch ‏@LesleyRiddoch 5m
Inverkeithing Park & Ride is full by 9am these days. Any plans to expand?

So where public transport alternatives exist and are frequent/convenient, folk do use them.

Who shops at Aiken and Niven for school kit? Their George st branch long gone, trip out to morningside. Funny time of year for school kit? Must ask my friends who use the schools that entail trips to Aiken and Niven (though of course the shop will supply any interested pArties)

Parking is subject to differential pricing as with much else - my work has a concessionary daily rate of £6 in the Castle Terrace car park that she complains about. Knowing that would really grind her gears, no doubt.

She was tweeting about this last week. I too said 'park and ride'. I do think that the tram will make park and ride more atractive.

"Twenty quid to park in the centre of town, or go somewhere else?"

Are these the only options?

Anyway, if you have that sort of cash, and live in Edinburgh, you could probably get a taxi from your home to town and back for around that price. Also, given that the "somewhere else" is probably Straiton, Livingston or the Gyle I would argue the £20 is a bargain.

I had a good laugh at that earlier on. You have to love how these people enjoy making things as hard for themselves as they possibly can then moaning about it afterwards.

There was one a few years ago (the same woman I expect) that stuck in my mind as it was whinging about how hard it was to get all the exercise and proper food we are supposed to get. Smiler drove home from work to get changed, drove back out again to the gym and went on the treadmill/stationary bike for a while. Then she drove home and spent two hours preparing an elaborate meal. She was then exhausted. Proof positive that there is just not enough time for a busy modern woman to exercise or cook. Hilarious.

Following a similar argument in the office the other day, we actually modelled the price of a parking space in central Edinburgh on the assumption that it should bring the same income stream as the six-storey office block that could instead be built on top of it.

Turned out that the price was about right for the location in dispute. City centre land is valuable and cars occupy quite a bit of it.

Park & Ride plus Lothian Buses day ticket on the other hand...everyone's a winner.

Its wierd that its right wingers who are the last to realise that the laws of supply and demand apply to parking. Since there is significant excess demand for resident's parking permits, the logic they embrace in every other part of life should point to a really big hike in price. The operators of car parks will carefully pitch their charges to maximise their profits - if there was no demand for parking at that price they wouldn't charge it, would they?

"I’d only brought my car to work so I could nip to Aitken & Niven at lunchtime for some school sports kit" Classic.

I found the head-in-the-sand attitude quite amusing actually. Quite predictable drivel from the Chipwrapper's "Chief Writer". I seem to remember her having a pop at me on Twitter for daring to criticise the publication's high journalistic standards. I refered her back to the front-page article about some Z-lister who forgot to top up their fake tan or something like that.
