I'm coming in with the Harrison Park feeder ride, but could also marshall if the two things are not incompatible. I have no children or other such impediments to worry about.

SJA won't cover events in Scotland (apart from oddities like superbikes at Knockhill that come under UK contracts). BRCS and St Andrews would probably bid - Rob, I'll PM you...

HAve sent out a e-mail to red cross, St johns and another group. Not the blue cross as it turned out that that's an animal rescue charity.

we'll have 14 police officers on bikes in attendance so if they're first aid qualified I imagine they'll be involved to some degree!

Green guide is just for sports stadiums, as far as I recall. Running through the scoring within the purple guide (mainly for music events, but it does make slight mention of protests and marches) I get a risk score of 9 (page 124ish), which is comfortably within the 4 first aiders only bracket.

Given the police are ultimately responsible for the risk assessment, I'd go with their guidance. I'd be amazed if the union protest marches arrange formal medical cover...

Hi TK. Thanks for the information. I think that the idea is that scrapes and scuffs and plasters and advice are all that would be needed. Fingers crossed we're not in a liable enough place to actually worry about a few bandaged knees. The main reason for first aiders is for that sort of thing. It's very clear that anyone who is seriously hurt will be left alone apart from an ambulance being called or I suppose CPR in a VERY serious situation.

We will be very clear to people with exactly what we expect them to do (mostly advice!)

Unfortunately we probably do not have enough money for the red cross and I'm fairly sure that we don't really need that level of coverage as the cycle will only take most people 10 minutes and most of the time they'll only be moving at a snails pace. (touch wood)

Will investigate.

Regarding first aid have you considered approaching the British Red Cross? I'm a first aid / ambulance crew volunteer there and they offer good rates for non profit events. Given the numbers attending you probably need to assess first aid requirements under the green / purple guides and may require additional skills and possibly an ambulance. I'd certainly also suggest some first aiders have an AED. The Red Cross can provide all the above including cycle responders and recently covered some similar events just outside the bypass.

In terms if volunteering to provide first aid, liability insurance can be an issue for first aiders. I'm personally covers by the Red Cross as an attendee if I treat anyone (which I would) but wouldn't be covered if I offered to first aid in any official role. It's likely the same if people have first aid at work or other qualifications

Hi guys,

I'm Head Marshall at POP2014.

We need marshals and first aiders to help out with the event.

Is this you?

Do you want undying glory for all eternity?

Can you bandage a scraped knee?

Can you tell some pedestrians "just hold on a moment until there is a gap" without accidentally exploding?

IF YOU ANSWERED YES, NO, or MAYBE to ANY of the above questions then Marshalling at POP is for you!

We also need riding marshals who will just be part of the group but will help slow the crowd by shouting basically if they see specific things (namely other marshals waving flags)

If you're interested then please comment or PM or e-mail alex at alexdrobertson.com

Cheers!

Also I've no idea whether it's marshal or marshall and I'm too stubborn to google it.
