Have Contour, downloaded VIRB edit last week and can confirm all works swimmingly without need to rename or otherwise faff with files first. Just "import".

#citrixfree is a reference to the past 14 months of hell since my bit of the uni 'rolled out' citrix, which turned out to be an unmitigated disaster (for me at least). having had any number of 'troubleshooting' and 'pilots' aimed at making m y computer actually work, i finally fled to a mac laptop, on which i can actually open files, and move between windows, and access my email... amazing.

"Currently the Garmin VIRB Edit software does not restrict to video from its cameras only.
There's versions for PC or MAC but you need to have at least Windows 7 or OS 10.7

Don't know about the MAC but for the PC it expects files to be .mp4 but you can simply change the Contour file .mov extension to this and import the clip. "

I think I stuck it on another video-editing-software thread - whichever version of VIRBedit was available about a year ago used to work fine with .MOVs from a Contour Roam renamed as .MP4. However, there were two VIRBeit upgrades earlier this year, introducing inter-clip transitions and so on, which resulted in it no longer behaving with my Roam clips and crashing in the edit window after making any change, no matter how uncomplicated. That was with my old 32-bit W7 llapptop, whose GPU recently died, which might have been related to the refusal to behave properly when working with video - haven't tried it yet under 64-bit W8.1...

"Will iMovie not do the trick?"

I would have thought so.

Should be a free download - if not already installed.

Actually I think iMovie is one piece of software that Apple has messed with far too match. Haven't used the desktop version for ages, but every 'upgrade' seemed to involve doing things differently and 'lose' some function that you'd got used to/liked.

These days I just use the iOS versions - perfectly useable even on small screen iPhone! (Though it helps if that's were you shot the video.

My other camera sends stuff straight to YouTube, where it can be edited 'enough' - unless you are wanting to win prizes...

Totally. It seems to be designed for children to use, so really intuitive. I'm not afraid of the command line, but a graphical interface is really handy for image-based stuff.

I use Windows Movie Maker which is easy to use, as in that the Edit button pretty much only has "Start Trim" & "Stop Trim", then it can save in different formats depending on what you're doing with it. And it's free.

I've recently downloaded the Garmin VIRB Edit but not used it yet. I like the idea of embedding tracks into it, and I'me waiting on getting my 1080p HD SJ1000 (£40!) for a rear view camera also.

I know it feels like the dark side but I bought a package deal of Adobe Premiere and Photoshop elements for around £50. I wanted the Photoshop part but it's actually been Premiere that I've used most often. It's a little overkill for simply cropping videos but for some of the more advanced stuff it's great.

I also use the go pro software but simply for removing the fisheye from the raw go pro footage.

+1 for using YouTube's editor. I once managed to make a mess of a video by reducing it to only the first 4 seconds whereas I wanted to delete the first 4 seconds, but aside from that n00b error, it's actually pretty good. The only downside is that you have to upload the whole video before you can start to trim it, but you can always just leave it to upload and go make a cup of tea while waiting. I'm impatient and thus use ffmpeg to quickly cut out the bit I want.

I'm with Kenny using ffmpeg, but also wouldn't recommend.

As others have said the editor build into youtube is probably the best way to go:

There is some help here: (I'm with @SRD and hate video tutorials)
https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/183851?hl=en-GB

But if you need to cut it before uploading to keep the upload size reasonable, then I've heard reasonable things about avidemux http://fixounet.free.fr/avidemux/

Someone else (mkns?) recommended MPEG Streamclip for simple clipping

I don't use MPEG Streamclip (I've changed my username, I'm mkns, honest), I use ffmpeg. However, I would not recommend it if you don't want to learn much in the way of new skills, it's a command line utility and is probably only really for use by techie people. For example, there's no way I'd even begin to try to explain to my eldest daughter (14yo) how to use it, despite her being pretty handy on her laptop.

I have used StoryTeller but I do empathise with your struggles to get it to work, SRD. Many times I tried to get it to upload to youtube without success. It has the supposed benefit of being able to have your speed / trace in the corner of your video, but on the one occasion I did that, it was out of sync by 20 seconds, thus completely useless.

I have recently obtained a GoPro camera, and you can get software for it:

http://gopro.com/software-app/gopro-studio-edit-software

It is much less painful to use than StoryTeller and I do not believe you need a GoPro to use it - you just import any video from anywhere. It might be worth trying that out - it certainly was easier to understand than StoryTeller, but that said, I still use ffmpeg.

The advantage of ffmpeg for me is that you can very easily and quickly extract part of a video. I've been using it this morning to edit videos I took of Justin Timberlake's gig yesterday (yeah, I'm not ashamed). Here's what you would do, for example, to extract video - this is what you would type on the command line (or DOS prompt, in Windows speak), it's all meant to be on one line but may wrap on to two lines in your browser:

ffmpeg -ss 00:02:25 -i MyVideo.mp4 -t 40 -acodec copy -vcodec copy MyExtract.mp4

Simply put, there are 6 parameters that you choose:

-ss 00:02:05 - the start time of the bit you want to extract. Important to have this before the next parameter for speed

-i MyVideo.mp4 - the video you're snipping from

-t 40 - how many seconds you want to grab

-acodec copy - just copy the audio, don't change it (very fast)

-vcodec copy - same as above, but for video

MyExtract.mp4 - your new video

Download links for ffmpeg are here:

http://www.ffmpeg.org/download.html

The above is pretty much your total learning curve, assuming you just want to quickly snip out a bit of video from a longer video. If you want to do more fancy stuff, like add text etc, I think you are then into the realm of wanting to use something else.

Also, ffmpeg might not work on Windows as easily as it does on my Mac - I refrain from using Windows unless I'm forced to (such as at work), so will struggle to offer much advice on that, although I could always try things out on the wife's laptop if you have any specific issues that I can replicate on it.

If you want more info on ffmpeg, let me know.

Someone else (mkns?) recommended MPEG Streamclip for simple clipping. If a file isn't too much larger than the bit I want to upload I'll just upload the whole thing and trim it online. I used AVS Video Editor for joining as a) it runs on my 6yo laptop and b) the overlaid logo on the unregistered version isn't too intrusive.

So, I downloaded 'storyteller' on the advice of the guy I just bought a contour roam2 from. looks like what i need - easy way to pull out little segments and post them to youtube. but it doesn't work - won't let me login or share anything.

What do people recommend - really don't want to have to learn much in the way of new skills. Nor to pay much.
