There's now a trench which looks like it's taking a power cable from the beach side of the path to the dropped kerbs on both sides of the road. I suspect a controlled crossing, but my google-foo is weak so I can't confirm.

You're right, there is a long dropped kerb already. My memory from this morning is that the new pair (for there is a matching one on the other side of the road) is further south and pedestrian sized.

Will take a better look this evening.

Isn't there already a slightly lower bit to the kerb around there, for vehicles wanting to park outside the prom gates or the occasional police car/ambulance accessing the prom?

New dropped kerb with blister tactile paving is being installed on Seafield Road East, just north of where the ramp up from the prom ends, about 50m south of the end of Fillyside road.

This is a hellish road to cross - wide, busy and fast. No sign of any crossing assistance (island, toucan) but that may be coming. Anyone know any more?

I sometimes go all the way up the new bit beside the tennis cours/community croft, do a bit of cobbling to get to the cut-through to Constitution St at Wellington Place, then go through Coatfield Lane/Giles Street for a little less traffic if I'm dragging a youngster.

"I've no idea where the council are going (literally or metaphorically) with the path ending on Constitution Street."

I suppose the idea is that by cycling a little way south on Constitution St you link up with the Leith Roseburn Cycle Superhighway. It kinda works, I do it regularly especially when I want to check who's parking in the cycle lane on Leith Walk.

@erob - the sketchy cobbled/one way bit past the police station is, sadly, the best way at the moment. I've no idea where the council are going (literally or metaphorically) with the path ending on Constitution Street.

I stay on Queen Charlotte Street from the Links then pick through to the Sadnport Place bridge for the WoL path. If it's just me I follow the shaky one way around, with the kids I shortcut using the pavement on Tolbooth Wynd.

Where is the Water of Leith side start of this route? Does it bypass the sketchy cobbled/one way bit passed the police station?

Edit: Found it - here

The section beside Links Gardens is currently plastic-barriered-off so that EdinCore can keep turf and soil on the bike path whilst they install fibres in a trench which is thankfully in the grass. The last set of tactiles beside the tennis courts are a bit wobbly as they've been lifted and not yet regrouted.

And you know the best thing? They've set the chicanes in both directions so that you are forced to ride right in front of the school gates on the pedestrian side! Just where the children exit, and the mums congregate. Genius.

If they really had to put a bit of fence there (which they don't) they could have put up a short section outside each gate, but parallel with the path along the segregation line.

Workmen back today to install two sets of chicanes. Almost exactly the same as the two the removed a couple of months ago but with addition of an optimistic extra 30cm or so protruding onto the grass in an impotent attempt at stopping cyclists from nipping round them. My dog walks just got far less pleasant along that stretch.

Public money being spent on digging holes and filing them in again. Awesome.

One of the annoying things about that section was the dropped kerb on the pedestrian side of the path only such that cyclists coming onto the path from the road rather than the Links section of off-road path would swing off to 'my' side of the path before moving back across.

Looks like they have dropped another section of kerb to the right of the turning circle to the other side of the tactiles rather than simply dropping a wider section next to the existing bit.

Looks like the designers have decided that there is a path and cyclists will use that path whether it makes sense for them to do so or not.

Yup, they've moved the tactiles that were placed RIGHT in the middle of a curve, to slightly to one end of the curve.

So, still dangerous in the wet, and largely unusable...

Maybe they're installing a small tarmac area for the recycling bins to sit on, which would at least make it easier to hoick them off the path every time I pass.

A large Crummock van with a Crummock tarmac-bothering machine was parked right across the enlarged entrance to the path from Links Gardens Lane, with the path itself blocked by orange plastic fencing with a man behind it chipping out a tactile. Further heavy plant was being manoeuvred into Links Gardens Lane, meaning you had to bump up an undropped kerb back onto the new path after squeezing around the back of the large van. I asked them if they could perhaps not block the alternative route on/off the path if they were working on the path itself as I went past.

Crummock Watch Update

They're currently re-laying a block of tactiles adjacent to the bend on Links Garden Lane, no idea why. Maybe installing a turnstile.

They've also laid an area (an isosceles trapezium with its base along the path) of 'stuff' (no idea what you call it, hexagonal matting just below the surface through which grass will grow) outside the easternmost gate. Doesn't look like they've done anything at the other gate yet.

Obviously, logistical considerations dictate waiting 'til the week the schools go back to do some work outside of a school, rather than attempt this during the prior six weeks of school holiday when there would have been no crowds of kids/parents twice a day.

The tactiles on the new curvy path as you leave St Mary's are pretty awful. They're at about a 30 degree angle to the path, and right on a bend.

And the tactiles right at the start of the new path across the Links are bad too. They're right in the middle of where you turn.

I've noticed that folk cycle on the pedestrian side at both places...

Other than the badly placed tactiles, it's a good addition. But it doesn't join up with WoL yet...

Possible weak point - the corner where the very wide path from the park turns onto the widened shared footway has been put back (fresh mortar on the kerbstones) where it was, leaving what could turn out to be a narrow pinchpoint:

Nothing noticeably catastrophic so far. Hopefully the soft-looking mud next to the bike side will be seeded to help firm it up more quickly, in case escape/diversion thereupon is required. Presumably the surface next to the tactiles at Links Gardens will be freshened at some point, rather than left as crumbly cement. The widening of the path opposite the new level toucan also sensibly starts well before the crossing.

Crivens to Betsy. They're running out of opportunities to mess something up. I'll have to check the progress of the bit alongside the tennis courts and community croft.

Tarmac now being raised to kerb level. Crummock and/or Council vindicated.

They appear to have decided on a compromise and raised the road surface about half way up to the kerb height. This still leaves enough of a kerb to cause problems for some cyclists, buggies, wheel chair users and maybe even peds.

I can understand the need for a gentle/low hump, or even no hump, on a road used by buses but whatever they do with the road I can't understand why the path and road surface can't be designed/installed to the same height. Not sure if it's the council or Crummock, but someone has cocked up here.

There are temporary traffic lights to allow for just a single lane through the Links Place crossing at the moment so they must be up to something.
