It has gaps between the setts that can completely swallow 32c tyres, and will tramline MTB knobbly tyres. I think part of the problem is that you tend to be looking for traffic (I am usually turning left there) so looking to my right and slowing down - I reckon it wouldn't be so bad if I could concentrate on where the wheels are and maintain a bit of speed. Strangely the tactile paving slabs on the meadows laid longitudinally often have my rear wheel slipping a bit, but it's never a problem as they aren't "stuck" - which is what it feels like in these ones, and I'm usually able to carry a bit of speed over them depending on pedestrians etc... </p> http://citycyclingedinburgh.info/bbpress/topic.php?id=12709#post-151139 Wed, 30 Apr 2014 13:31:16 +0000 wingpig 151139@http://citycyclingedinburgh.info/bbpress/ <p>Unusual for the entire swathe to be laid longitudinally to the direction of travel - those at the edge of the High Street are perpendicular to the main section of the street so I sometimes use them to reduce the frequency of juddering. Deepening of the gaps between then unlikely to help - it's possibly a bad combination of sett-spacing and wheel-size, such as with the <a href="http://goo.gl/maps/BKcIS">square-bump surface</a> on the join of the path round Holyrood Park just across from Croft-an-Righ, which didn't bother me with 23s but is noticeable with 25s.</p> <p>Your bit looks about as cycle-friendly as the Jeffrey St/Canongate junction, where there's a half-arsed tarmac patch over a larger slipping/escarpmenting group of diagonally-arranged setts, though their problem was not so much escaping filler as no filler and inadequate preparation of the underlying surface. </p> http://citycyclingedinburgh.info/bbpress/topic.php?id=12709#post-151138 Wed, 30 Apr 2014 13:26:17 +0000 algo 151138@http://citycyclingedinburgh.info/bbpress/ <p>Hello,</p> <p>cycling across <a href="https://www.google.com/maps/@55.941983,-3.145322,3a,75y,63.96h,79.73t/data=!3m4!1e1!3m2!1s6-JN6eEmrik5X8IJIcYCWg!2e0">these</a> cobbles, at least with my 28 tyres is really treacherous. I've clarenced this but I wondered if the mortar being washed out between cobbles is a more common problem? I may have missed an existing thread on this... </p>
