Got it back yesterday and it was the lower headset bearings, totally crushed so got a new one fitted. Running nice and smooth today.

Anything like this noise?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9TON0raGWV0&feature=youtube_gdata_player

As well as grinding it was leaking rusty tears, implying a loss of bearing integrity at the very least.
Fortunately when that happened I had already been considering replacing the fork for a while.

Thanks guys, bearing sounds most likely. I will get it to the bike shop tomorrow, forecast looks horrible anyway.

There really isn't anything inside a headset to work loose without having broken. There is a risk that whatever is rattling about in there could jam the headset making it impossible to steer.

cracked bearings in the headset? Usually cheap and easy to fix if you have user-servicable bearings. The more you ride on it, the more you are likely to damage the surfaces of the races, making a more difficult, expensive repair lightly.

Anyone advise what may be wrong with my bike? It sounded like a bolt was loose or something tonight, but when I got home I found the noise was whenever I turned the handlebars. It sounds like something is loose inside.

I will take it to the bike shop but they might need a while to fix it. Should it be safe to ride in the meantime?
