Thanks slowcoach.

Any ideas on the infrastructure changes mentioned in SRD's The Times article?

proposals are for signs "to be lawfully placed on or near roads in England, Scotland and Wales, with a limited number prescribed for use only in England or in Scotland." approval expected in 2015 so nothing certain yet.

Putting aside the Referendum Question for a minute, do these proposed changes apply to Scotland or just England (and possibly Wales)?

Other proposed changes to signs regulations include:
a shared use zebra pedestrian and cyclist crossing;
mandatory cycle lanes, exceptions for cyclists at no-entries, and yellow lines to be allowed without traffic orders;
and contra-flow cycle lanes without seperating line.
Some changes which have been already been allowed in England but not authorised by the Scottish Ministers would also be extended to Scotland (eg Trixie mirrors)

"Cycle boxes at traffic lights, designed to protect cyclists at dangerous junctions, are set to be enlarged, with 7.5 meter deep zones to be introduced.
Dangerous cycle lanes that force cyclists to ride in the gutter at traffic lights – taking them through the blind-spots of lorries and other vehicles – are to be scrapped. A technicality currently means that cyclists can only enter cycle boxes via these lanes, but this is to be changed under new measures to come into force next year."

Will read properly later. Scanning pictures is interesting n that one of the documents has lots of helmetless people, totally segregated paths, and cars on the wrong side of the road... The other features helmets and on road cycle lanes.

Interesting comment that only an odd number of bollards should be used to stop larger motor vehicles. Cramond Brig is a fine example of why an even number doesn't work as everyone trys to take the middle lane.

Well that was depressing.

Earlier this week I rode the Haymarket to Edinburgh Park route, thinking that as something that's had a bit of money and a lot of development, and has been retitled Route 8, it would be good.

It failed in every way possible, and that publication neatly explains why.

To those used to cycling in Edinburgh I'm sure it's a big improvement. But I was expecting a new path like this to be at best practice level, but in reality it was only marginally better than not having anything at all.

As cyclists we should demand that all new infrastructure meets these levels, and tell planners and builders in advance that if it doesn't, they'll be hearing from us long, loud and unpleasantly.
