I'm fairly sure he didn't get them locally. I've seen two or three people making their own snow tyres, by driving self-tapping screws through from the inside, cutting them off about 1-2mm above the tread, and layering old tyre canvas and/or duct tape on the inside. Hard work and heavy, but grippy.</p> <p>Edit: you could make snow shoes the same way! Do they work? Do the studs stay on? Do you spend more time getting them on and off the bike than you save by being able to go where you want in the ice? etc etc... </p>
