" And more importantly I didn't feel like I was causing them a problem or that I was an idiot."

Yes. Much as I value their technical know-how and convenient location, the above is the main reason I return here (and also to cycleservice, run by former employees, with the same approach)

Picked up from The Bicycle Works this morning, all fixed and working smoothly. Very much enjoyed my ride home.

Also, thanks again for the recommendation to go there. Really good service at a reasonable price. And more importantly I didn't feel like I was causing them a problem or that I was an idiot. I'll be using them again.

Dropped the bike in at the Bicycle Works on SRD's advice. Seemed very friendly and helpful so fingers crossed it will be fixed shortly!

I only take my hub gear to Bikeworks or Cycleservice.

(not saying the others can't cope, but I'm not keen to experiment...)

@Stickman

If the bearings on the rear axle are too tight due to overtightening the locknuts it might cause the pedals to spin as if the bike is in fixed.

Try pushing the bike in different gears to see if it happens in them all.

There's a certain amount of play in a Sturmey Hub I believe which is "normal", but how much constitutes "normal" I'm not sure.

Here's the advice from Sheldon "Planetary" Brown

I have a modern Sturmey 3-speed on 1 bike (X-F3D with 70mm drum brake) and it was not quite right out the box, took a bit of tinkering to reduce the play and get it running fairly smoothly.

Hart's Cyclery (Corstorphine), Bike Works (Marchmont), Cycle Service (Pleasance) will all do hub gears for you.

"Sounds like the 'normal' wheel bearings are too tight.

Is it 'old'?"

No, it's a new bike. I may take it somewhere to get it checked. Any recommendations on the best repair shop for hub gears?

I'm hoping that someone with SA 3 speed experience can give a bit of advice please as I'm not sure if my hub is behaving normally:

When pushing the bike the pedals are turning a lot - is this normal? And when freewheeling there is a very rough feeling through the pedals.

Is this normal or does it sound like it needs adjustment? I don't want to take it along to a shop if it's all ok.

Thanks for any tips. (And I thought a hub gear would be less hassle tha derailleurs)
