So here's the route I ended up taking this morning:

alt commute by Ed

The "missing link" part of the path (between the Royal Edinburgh & Myreside Rd) is a wide, fully-tarmacked path, that looks complete. I was only prevented from using it because it was fenced off. It wouldn't be that difficult for the contractors working on site to open the path, just by moving some fencing.

The remaining path (from Myreside to Colinton Rd) is very narrow - I was scared of snagging my handlebars.

"Needs a bike ride some research/'campaigning'."

Fixed that for you.

(Unless of course you know who actually owns path.)

"The railwayside path through to Colinton Road could become a valid option if it were cleared, widened, stabilised and lit."

I've always assumed it's 'railway' - so now Network Rail(?)

Previously I have always thought of it as 'no-one will think it's worth spending money on'.

Now with the new route in prospect through Royal Ed (and a new ped crossing) maybe its possible.

Ideal for Sustrans Community Links.

Needs some research/'campaigning'.

I went along Myreside Road last week and didn't notice any problem. Have I just got used to poor road surfaces? I think Colinton Road is worse.

It's not a viable route as yet, because it's still a building site and the access to the REH at Myreside Road is fenced off out of hours.

I think it will be possible when construction at the Royal Edinburgh finishes. The section from Myreside Road to Colinton Rd is *very* narrow though.

The back entrance that morningside mentioned isn't really a back entrance, more a side entrance, quite near to the 'front' entrance.

Access from Myreside road is currently not possible.

As far as I'm aware, there is no longer any "back entrance" to the Royal from Myreside direction, due to the building works on the west end of the site.

I was through that way a few weeks ago and the land is well HERAS-fenced off, with no detour, signs saying the route was closed and a lot of groundscaping works going on.

You'll have to take the long way around and approach from the Morningside end.

meggetgate is paved/fine (once you get on the path - see previous thread started by arellcat).

Personally, I wouldn't wind around the carpark to the bridge with Colinton - cars do stupid things there - but would go straight to access canal, and come off at Ashley terrace, then straight across Gray's Loan to Colinton road.

But the route they give might be faster.

If you go in the gate off morningside park/miller crescent (ie coming from near morningside M&S) there's bike parking in front of the first big building you come to. From the tipperlinn entrance, it's less obvious, but I know there is some there somewhere (had confused conversation recently with a spokes member who works there who was trying to explain where it is to me. I was the confused one, not her)

I would avoid the bit between Colinton Road and Myreside Road, which follows the suburban railway. Earth surface, very narrow at points, lot of shrubbery and pretty bumpy.

I would just continue up Colinton Road and turn right at Tipperlin Road and go in the back entrance of the Royal Ed.

Meggegate section perfectly fine for a road bike. Colinton Road to Myreside may be muddy/have puddles - particularly after last nights rain.

Hi

I need to get to a meeting at the Royal Ed Hospital today and CycleStreets gives me this option:

http://edinburgh.cyclestreets.net/journey/40809041/

I have my road bike with me today so is this route all suitable for that? I'm wondering specifically about the Meggetgate and Colinton Rd to Myreside Rd off-road sections. I've never been on these before.

Oh, and can anyone who has visited or been detained (no need to specify which) at the Royal Ed confirm what the bike parking is like?

Thanks
