Ah...one of the most delightful city cyling experiences I've ever had was due to a navigational error in Gorgie. I tried to go through some waste ground and up a bank, only to find myself confronted with a gravel-filled, tree-lined canal. My head swam for a moment before I realised it was in fact the West Approach road which had been closed for resurfacing. Much nicer without tarmac or cars on it...

The Hamburg plans look pgreat. They are such a contrast to the designs from the 50s and 60s which had the huge sweeping grey concrete motorways cutting through everything in their path.

Ooh lovely.
I've spent some time looking at maps of central Edinburgh, and wondering which roads could be closed to motor traffic, or made one way with contra-flow cycle lanes. Can't find many obvious choices, but West Approach Road is ideal!

Superb. I'd love this.
And imagine it leading into a de-roaded Lothian Road, a generously sized park or city square for strolling, cycling, sitting by the fountains and trees. It'd be wonderful.

How about something more useful than that short stretch of nowhere-to-nowhere urban motorway that shaves a few seconds off a small number of journeys (only to end them right back onto single carriageway urban and residential roads)?

(Bus and/or tram could run along the dust to the right of the fence?)
