The charitable aspect isn't trivial in absolute terms - £500k raised last year - but is a little at odds with the participants' resources were it pure philanthropy.</p> <p><em>The rich man's Cannonball Run...</em></p> <p>If I may be pedantic, participants in the Cannonball <em>were</em> timed overall, so the event was to all intents and purposes a race, albeit a somewhat lighthearted one, but still with a notional winner. The fastest time was usually a combination of good navigation, good (high) average speed and not getting caught speeding. The current Cannonball Run Challenge is very definitely about not getting caught speeding: thermal imaging, laser speed camera jammers, police radio scanners, and anything else that might help.</p> <p>The Gumball 3000 isn't a race, and there is no timing element beyond getting to each night's accommodation in time to dress for dinner. The Gumball Rally (the film) <em>was</em> a race though, with no rules at all, and it was loosely based on the real world Cannonball events.
