"you're not a car, you mustn't have a light that casts a beam"

New one on me!?! If someone came out with that I'd probably look at them with contempt and confusion and suggest they shouldn't be so dashed stupid.
Unless of course they can show me the bit of C&U or the Highway code which says so....?

If you think bike lights can get stupidly expensive try pricing diving lights.. (shudder)

What's this rubbish about not having a beam?

The lights i'm for this building are on the same order as the ones above but will cost about £50, not nearly as pretty mind.

"you're not a car, you mustn't have a light that casts a beam" posse.

and get a flag while you're at it...;-)

Your bike casts no shadow - what more do they want?

I have a new solution to try this coming winter - I'm going to ride the Roseburn path unlit (except for one of those tiny tiny Knogg style token efforts).

That will keep the moaners happy, and me legal(ish) - then when I get up to the end, I'll turn my lights back on again.

Otherwise I've found even pointing the light at the left verge by the front wheel will get squeals of outrage from the "you're not a car, you mustn't have a light that casts a beam" posse.

The latest issue of BikeBiz dropped through the letterbox this morning.

The cover is usually an advert. This month it's for an upgraded light - "Our 2011 lights just got 30% brighter at no extra cost".

There's a maxim which goes 'you should spend 10% of the value of a bike on lock(s)' - which most people ignore.

Clearly there can be nothing so simple for lighting - it depends on what you need them for.

If you're into insane night-time downhilling then 'the best there is' is probably a strong consideration. Likewise if you commute on high speed and/or unlit roads a good front light and a selection of rear lights are essential.

For round town (of course everyone on here uses lights at night...) simple, put in you pocket is probably more important.

Any thoughts on lights - cost/value/effectiveness etc?

Also, one of the first topics on here late last year started with "I mentioned this on the 'equipment' topic but it might really be a conversation of its own - namely, bright and/or dim lights, and the conflict they provoke." (@Dave)

This produced an interesting range of views and raised some awareness of the need to 'dip' - particularly on off-road paths.
