Cycling uphill into west wind and heavy rain was an option last night (thankfully I was given a lift the last bit of the route). I am not aware of a drop in the wind when it rains. But happy to be corrected.

Cheers guys.

My commute, in particular, has about 120 seconds on the city roads and the rest on the NEPN path, back roads and country roads so I have the joy of not being surrounded by traffic for 98% of it. I can see where your theory would apply in town, though.

I did wonder about the wind - when it's dry, most times I'm really fighting the Westerly wind going along the A90 <--> Kirkliston road. It seems less of a hassle when it's raining, but perhaps I'm just concentrating on how drenched I'm getting :D

is there sometimes less wind when it's wet?

Also sometimes I find that the wetter weather means more stationary traffic which in turn means a clearer bus lane/bus lane with less people weaving in and out? Does that help?

I did wonder about the tyres - do you think they do travel faster when wet?

Looking for scientific input.

My commute home (West End to Dalmeny, mostly travelling West) currently takes 50 minutes, given the diversion along the Kirkliston/Craigies' road.

Unless it's raining, in which case I am 5 minutes faster.
Why? My best bets are;

1. Meteorology - is there less wind when it's raining?
2. Coefficient of friction - do 90psi tyres travel faster in the rain than the dry?
3. Motivation - am I just trying harder cos I want to get home?

Any learned wisdom?
