"

With the Commonwealth Games approaching I felt that it was an appropriate time to hand the petition to the council, and to seek a response. Thus I asked if any councillors would be willing to accept the petition in person. Cllr Frank MacAveety, Glasgow's cycling 'czar' and Cllr Alistair Watson, the political lead in Land and Environment Services have agreed to accept the petition next Friday (25th July), at the City Chambers at 11:30am.

Well being advised that there was no room for an outdoor exhibit at Scottish Cycle Show (at Velodrome), as the space was needed for car parking, and then having a shuttle bus service (to the cycle show!)just perfectly sums up the massive gap in the thinking.

The Hydro (and SECC linked venues) further highlight the weaknesses. The Hydro is actually quite close to Finnieston (somehow describing it as Exhibition Centre seems to be stretching credibility, given the fact that the link bridge isn't connected to the station or SECC, and is markedly different to the link between Birmingham International and the NEC.

I predict gridlock, I suggest a variation on critical mass - just loads of riders 'flowing' through the lines of stationary motor vehicles as an interesting way to see the effects on traffic flow.

I also predict a fair few cycle crashes on the flawed parts of the cycling infrastructure.

There will be several riders crashing into the kerb or bollards - Westbound on London Road where the segregated but also isolated 'bit' starts, or crashing with cars where it ends at Bridgeton Cross.

I also hope that (if it is busy) the operation of the Bridge to Nowhere works - I've crashed twice already coming down on to the rump of Argyle Street on the super smooth slurry coat tarmac when it has been coated with the greasy residue - first of fallen leaves in autumn and then fallen catkins in spring.

A fair few other details too.

Currently Council workers on overtime cleaning up road gullies, but failing to trim back the bushes which hit you if you try riding in the cycle lane... and plenty of potholes still remaining.

No I know.

Would be nice to think there are 'embarrassed' about both their lack of 'active travel to the Games' provision and the 'everyday healthy options legacy', but...

Having to find extra money for CG (80% Scottish 20% Glasgow tax) won't help.

Maybe they will have to put up parking charges...

This isn't about getting money from the games though, it's getting the council to stsrt spending its own money

Signed it. Had rubbish cycle last time in Glasgow out to SECC as route blocked for commonwealth games should be able to cycle clydeside canal routes also good. Traffic heavier in Glasgow I would say.

Thanks for signing! Its going very well with 800 signatures as of this morning. Most impressive are some of the comments. Pretty damming for GCC. Please keep signing and spreading the word! Petition.

I too signed. I cycle most days in both cities and apart from Lothian Buses having far superior driver behaviour i dont see much difference btw the two. Cycling down to Pilton today from the city center there were several massive 'tank track' pot holes which are actually quite rare in Glasgow.

oh and you dont have to dodge the tram rails in Glasgow either.

I got my ticket pack through for the Commonwealth Games. There's a nice big fold-out map of Glasgow in it, and a smaller one of Edinburgh. Actually, the maps are rubbish, but the relevant criticism here is that they don't show any cycling routes at all.

There's pointless waffle about green stuff in the huge unneccesary pack, which they sent me twice because I got tickets in the recent round. But on cycling to the venues? Nada.

Hi Guys,

Having watched things improving over in Edinburgh for a while now, I was getting jealous! So, I've decided to do something about it and have started a wee petition. I'm hoping that just before the Commonwealth Games that it won't be quite so wee, so I can hand it in to the council. Therefore, I need your help. If you care at all about cycling in Glasgow, please sign it. Even if you don't please spread the word! Remember this isn't just for cyclists, it's for everyone!

Thanks!
