Good one cyclingmollie

I did try the Christian path this morning and it's fine. Although it does leave a few metres of cobbles in Brighton Place.

amir, I used to go round the golf course on Stanley Street, then left onto Duddington Road then turn right up Meadowfield Drive, cut through onto the Queen's Drive and do a couple of laps of the Seat :)

How does this route compare with the Christian Path (for glass, rowdy types etc)? I am trying to get from Musselburgh direction onto Duddingston Road (avoiding the awful cobbles in Porty) so as to rejoin the Innocent at Duddingston Road W.

I used to cycle that way regularly but have stopped going that way at morning school start time, since the Portobello high opened due to high numbers of pupils effectively blocking the bridge (don't dare ring your bell!)

@ Amir - yes I have also only just discovered it and used it a couple of times to avoid those roadworks, but it cuts off 2.5km from my route, so I am just putting up with the roadworks for now.

Rather than cycle on the pavement I just go against the one-way traffic in that small contraflow - they are invariably stopped anyway.

@amir - its certainly a nice quite alternative route to get from the NCN1 to Porty Prom. If I'm not in a rush I normally detour via Christian Crescent to avoid Hope Lane/Stanley St completely.

I've just "discovered" this bridge as an alternative to the roadworks at Milton Road. Nice - but Hope Lane/Stanley Street is a rat-run - despite the surface and speed bumps

Looking again none of the step have the number of steps recorded in OSM - this is used by the routing engines. I've added this just now (some accurate, some estimates) so lets see if that makes a difference in the next couple of days.

Pretty sure the quiet isn't what you were describing! It takes in three sets of steps...

(I done so OSM edits around here this afternoon, nothing obviously missing but just marked cycling as expressly permitted on some of the paths)

I don't think there is anything missing in OSM, perhaps just the way the algorithm works.

The cutoff point seems to be somewhere on the zigzag north of Sir HL Road.

Compare the balanced route and quiet route here:

http://edinburgh.cyclestreets.net/journey/41337165/

Also the quiet route is a bit step-tastic.

Yes, it needs a third underpass to reach Brunstane Road.

On OSM is there any way to trace a route and export it? I wanted to share this route previously and visited OSM (as it's the only map I can find that has these cut-throughs) but it seemed to involve riding the route with GPS beforehand.

Easily followable on OSM. I think you meant "turn right", not "turn left" after the underpasses.
And according to OSM it's Brand Drive not Christian Drive.

There is a quiet, kerb free, almost off-road route to NCN1 from the south end of the bridge. But you need to cut through the houses (left into Christian Grove, right into Christian Drive, left into Brand Gardens and the cut-through is on the right), up the ramp onto the pavement on the north side of Milton Road, along the pavement to the junction, down the ramp to the underpass, through both underpasses, turn left, along the side of what was Big W and you're on the NCN. I doubt any map could show it correctly. And underpasses probably rule it out for many people.

" it took the full three days to complete the job, we cleared all the railings and cut the vegetation back about a meter from the path"

Just a note to take care on the Portobello end. There is broken glass on the ramp and lots of debris / thorns from the work to stop the vegetation attacking cyclists as they round the corner

I feel slightly bad requesting this as the roses smelled lovely in flower and they have almost completely obliterated them now but it saves having to get off the bike and duck to get through
