A wee festive update to close off the thread. He went for the Kaff, forks and all. Got someone else to build it up (I was busy with family Christmas). Here's a pic:

£125 for a decent steel frame has got to be some kind of bargain!

Thanks for all your help and Merry Christmas!

Thanks for the suggestions folks, we're going to try a wee visit to the Bike Station sometime soon and see what turns up. I think they're happy to sell frames on their own, I once went in to scope out a (still unfulfilled) singlepeed/fixie project and they seemed happy enough to flog me a 531 frame if and when one turned up.

Will update y'all when anything happens...

Thinking on the Kaffenback some more, given the frame is only £125, you can get some canti brakes for not very much....

Look in the Scrap Metal Container at the council tip.

I have an old Peugoet bike I have which I us if I'm leaving one overnight and there is a risk of it being stolen.

I went to the local council tip a year ago and happened to park next to the Scrap Metal container. I saw two bikes being wheeled in to it, perfectly good and no flat tyres etc.. so I wheeled them in to the back of my car before the council workers saw what I was doing. They have older Reynolds frames.

You could try trawling through Gumtree too. This is how I got my steel frame for my fixed gear project, which is taking me ages to do!

It might be worth also trying Alex Patterson Cycles on Roseburn Street. Though eBay is probably as easy a route as any - the early-mid 90s Raleigh frames were pretty good at the higher end.

Actually, checking on it the Surly frames are about £300 from Wiggle, so definitely Bike Station as the best option I think.

Open 5 days

BS does frames, Wed eve or Sat (I think)

eBay

Start search with Reynolds 531

Can often be worth buying complete bike rather than frame only.

Damn. I was going to suggest the Kaff (got one myself - it's a bit 'agricultural' but it really does the job. Commuted on it, ridden audax and sportive on it, and next year sticking some knobblies on to ride cyclocross - tis the do-all bike!

Bike Station is a good idea - though I'm not sure if they sell just the frames?

Occasionally something will come up on eBay.

Surly frames aren't hideously expensive?

Maybe this should be under "stuff" but bear with me...

Friend of mine was out on his old-school steel road bike (80's racer is the best description) when the downtube split, necessitating a taxi home from Ratho.

Any ideas for a low-cost replacement?

My first thoughts were:

Kaffenback (no good - wrong brakes)
Eastside Bikes
The Bike Station
eBay

Any ideas much appreciated.
