@bill I'm temporarily back to a basic (Sustrans-branded) bell with a rotatable hammer, although this has already been problematic because as I approached the exit of the Slateford Aqueduct this morning, I went to ring the bell a few times to attempt to discourage anyone from joining as I was exiting, but the hammer rotated away from my with my first ring and I was then unable to find it again whilst negotiating the cobbles - as a result, someone continued to join the aqueduct as I was exiting and it was awkward.

@LivM I got the "Knog Oi Bell" for my Secret Santa at work two years ago. I really like the look. I used it on my flat-bar hybrid. On my drop-bar bike I kept the bell that the bike came with because I can rotate the hammer to convenient position.

"Pah! Old fashioned technology!
"If I want a new bell it will link to my Apple watch, into my Apple phone and into my heartrate meter to sense when I've sensed a danger and ring the bell for me. Total cost including phone and watch £1500 and a job well done. I'm sure one will be on kickstarter any moment.
"Or I suppose I could get the £7 one."

Aha, well found. I'm missing the circlip from the top of the ringer, which is why that fell out, but I fear that something is missing from underneath it as well - I can't see how the flat, flexible bit of metal that connects to the lever is supposed to actually make the ringer move...

Cameron Toll last night one of the chained-up bikes was screaming in apparent agony. I tracked it down to a combined light/electronic horn unit which was still active.

I unplugged the power lead as the noise was genuinely unpleasant and a bit alarming. Just as I did that the owner reappeared. Could have been embarrassing but it seems the horn turns itself on at random all the time so no sweat.

All hail the humble bell.

My bike suffered catastrophic bell failure around halfway into my commute this morning when my large ding dong bell abruptly stopped ringing, shortly after which part of the ringer actually fell out of the bell so I had to stop to retrieve it. I fear that I've lost at least one clip, but I hope to be able to fix it, although I may need to find a schematic of a working bell in order to achieve this goal.

Just reread this thread with amusement thanks to the index helpfully provided by Arellcat. It seems that I failed to report the most amusing incident since aquiring my 'large ding dong bell' in this thread, if at all on the forum...

29th September 2016 Facebook/Twitter post: initially startled but ultimately impressed two female joggers on the towpath, one of whom commented, "that's a big one!" #largedingdongbell

Unfortunately the years of commuting and locking my bike to racks and, most notably, next to other bikes, haven't been kind to my bell; it's now somewhat rusty and slightly bent so rarely produces as satisfying a ring as when new.
