@kaputnik - yes according to the signs on the road it's closed all day (0600-2100) the whole way from outside RBS to just south of the railway bridge. I'm not disposed to discuss why it's closed, but would strongly support your point about finding a different route that day, rather than assuming that just because one is riding a bike one will be able to squeeze through regardless of the closure.

Lots of new painted pictures of bikes have appeared in the bike lanes along Gogar Station Road in the past couple of days. They are very decorative, although the bike lanes were already pretty visible. I'm not sure why there's been a sudden need to paint these when we've managed perfectly well without them for some years...

Thanks Morningsider.

That might be the best way to go. I have no strong views against the warehouse being used productively, only the impact of additional (especially HGV) traffic on the narrow bit of GSR.

HankChief - you could raise concerns with the Traffic Commissioner, who licenses goods vehicle operators. It is likely that the depot will be an "operating centre" and its use may have conditions attached, such as hours of operation and the number of vehicles allowed to park there.

Contact details at (need to scroll down a bit):

https://www.gov.uk/government/organisations/traffic-commissioners

Yeah. The construction seems pretty minor, but its the change of business class to distribution that increases the traffic flow on the road that has the potential for issues.

Others use the road more than me so it'll be good to get their views.

A weight restriction could be the answer although I've only ever seen good driving by the huge Dalton lorries so maybe unfair on them.

I assume it's ongoing traffic you're concerned about rather thsn construction traffic. I'm not sure if delivery depots have any licencing, although I assume not. If they did presumably a condition could be attached to the licence. Otherwise the only option would be a weight/size/HGV restriction on part of the road (I assume that's possible).

@hankchief - I believe that is the way timber lorries operate - they are given a route which they have to stick to or lose the contract for that particular job, but I don't know where the authority for that comes from or whether you could do it in something like a construction site

Does anyone know if planning permission could be granted with traffic conditions attached?

E.g. all (big) vehicles accessing the site have to travel to & from Hermiston to the South on the nice wide straight road and not on the narrow & wiggly GSR North of the site.

That would seem a reasonable approach but would it be enforceable?

DEVELOPMENT CHANGES WITHIN THE GOGAR AREA

Planning Application –ref no 16/04277/FUL - 1a Gogar Station Road

Technologistics Ltd (also known as APC Overnight Delivery) site which was previously Hewden Plant Hire along past Autospares have lodged a planning application to change the current usage of their site from class 4/5 to class 6 storage and distribution. This planning application also includes an additional extension to their building and a variation to their trading hours that had already been restricted following a planning application in 2014. Due to the nature of Technologistics Ltd being a delivery business, since they have begun trading earlier this year, everyone has noticed a significant increase in articulated Lorries, HGV, Transit vans, causing safety issues for road users and especially cyclists. This application if granted could have a detrimental impact on the existing traffic problem on Gogar Station Road and the connecting roads in the surrounding area.

Contrary to a statement dated 17 October 2016 on the planning department’s site – no neighbours have received notification and the closing date for lodging comments /objections is 11 November 2016.

If you feel concerned about how this could impact on your quality of life and the Gogar area - then please lodge your comments/objections on the Edinburgh Council Planning Department website reference no – 16/04277/FUL comments must reach the Planning department by the 11 November ( it is very easy to do and your views and comments would be greatly appreciated).

Further details/information please feel free to contact Gael Fisher email lapanini@aol.com or call <readacted> or Facebook “Save Gogar Hermiston Greenbelt “.

I had a word with local connection but consensus is the outside world is not processed very empirically and decisions are made large on some internal mechanism unconnected to a reality that on this issue cyclists would see as the norm. So no point in pointing out the improved safety of the road as would not be computed that way by the eye of the beholder?

I rode down it for the first time on Monday and had a driver hang back behind me even when she could have safely passed- Thanked her at the lights and let her go past.

Definitely a better experience, mainly due to the smooth surface. A definite success and hopefully the model for the likes of Lochend Road.

I have finally written up the story of what it took to get GSR 'sorted'.

http://pedalonparliament.org/gogar-station-road-how-to-fix-a-road-in-273-emails/

It is quite long but then so was the campaign.

The short version is don't give up until it is sorted :)

The bit that really worried me about the old GSR was that 90% of my attention was spent on just staying on the bike, and I could spare very little for monitoring what was going on around me. The surface was so bad that without constant adjustment, you'd have put a wheel down one of the cavernous potholes and could easily come off into a stream of traffic. On one occasion in the dark I swerved to avoid a hole and got whipped across the face by a low hanging branch. It truly was not a pleasant riding experience.

From that viewpoint the new surface alone definitely makes things safer, imho. I ride GSR most days and I certainly notice more cars hanging back at the bends until they can see more clearly what's coming the other way. Just as importantly, I can now pay much more attention to what's going on around me.

I think average speeds have probably reduced, on balance. Sadly I think the criticism that a 1-way road would raise speeds again is probably true. But, if the flip side is that the cars would no longer need to swerve in and out of cycle lanes, would a 5-10 mph increase in car speeds matter so much? (EDIT: I would include some traffic speed calming measures in there)

If I had a free hand then I think now I'd opt for conversion of the pavement and the cycle lanes into a nice 3m wide bidirectional shared use path. Might be politically more palatable than making it one-way, but would of course require a bit more engineering, so that ship has probably sailed.

But can I just re-iterate 'well done' to those who campaigned to fix it :-)

I posted last week that I'd ventured down this a couple of times and think it is mad awesome based on the small sample size.

Having a cycle lane which people have to drive in to pass each other is vanilla continental design. There is no way of painting the road such that cyclists won't physically be in the way when two cars meet, so setting it up with a default road presence for cyclists is a smart move.

Consider the parallel options for death pinch islands. On the way to Penicuik the cycle lane disappears at the pinch point even though the cyclist is still physically occupying that space. In Dunbar, the cycle lanes get massive so it's obvious that you have to drive into the bit which is "for cyclists" (and again, the cyclist is in the same place either way).

Smart design imo.

I only previously attempted riding to RBS once (the road naturally connects our house in Currie with some possible commuting options) as it was just horrific. I obviously use it as a rat run to the airport in the car myself so contribute to this on either side. If it was one way for cars I should think people would drive at least 20-30mph faster.

I could envision regularly cycling the road in its current state after avoiding it for years, can't really say fairer than that.
