I don't want to fall prey to excessive negativity about all this. What may be useful for clarity and transparency is to compare the figures in the report linked to above for 2013 and 2014 with the figures prior to the ring-fenced budget.

Anyone able to fig out a breakdown of the cycling budget from 2012? 2011? 2010? Earlier?

Then we will know if we can rightly complain about "wasted" cash or whether in fact the Council have been doing these things all along...

Obviously any money spent on chicanes or anything else that makes cycling less convenient should count as negative spending and subtract from the total

Since a lot of it is being squandered on chicanes and other pointless obstacles, I really think we need to reconsider whether what we've asked for is wise.

I'd rather have a smaller amount of money that was well targeted and leave the rest for the general transport budget, 7% is too much if we can't even spend 5% constructively today.

By my reckoning, the actual money spent on new cycling infra is £1031k + £286k, out of a total of £18,233k + £8,450k.

So that means the real percentage of the transport budget spent on cycling is 100 * 1317 / 26683 = 4.9%, not 7%

I think it's pretty sneaky that they use the cycle budget for things that would've happened anyway e.g bus lane, cycle lane and ASL resurfacing and re-lining.

I mean these things benefit motorists too (because motorists drive over ASLs, drive over bus lanes out of hours and park in cycle lanes)

When will we see the rest of the roads budget used for cycle projects that benefit motorists? Oh wait, all cycle projects benefit motorists, don't they? - by reducing congestion...

It's interesting to see what the money is being spent on too. Although I didn't notice a line for chicanes and additional parking on cycle lanes so guess they come under "various".

this is great and brilliant and puts edinburgh miles ahead of others.

but it needs to be used properly to accomplish intended aim.
