I hung my polystyrene bicycle hat on my bar end on Wednesday to let my wasp-stung bonce cool in the wind.

I'd noticed the same as the OP, specifically on the NEPN. I've not see it on roads, so I have come to the conclusion that cyclists are taking their helmets off on cycle paths, and putting them on when they get to the road.

I've never taken a helmet off without somewhere decent to stow it. If I want the sensation of wind in my hair I don't want to accompany it with unbalanced controls and excessive clattering. But if there's a pannier or rucksack available I'd definitely take it off if I'm on quiet roads. I'm really only using it for the camera in town.

That's what we used to do BITD. Whilst ATBing as soon as we hit the road off came the helmet and only worn for the rough stuff.

Just goes to show what an encumberance helmets are for cyclists, I suppose...

I've certainly noticed that fewer people wear a helmet on warm days compared to the wintertime. Which is hardly a surprise I suppose.

On warm days I sometimes take my helmet off on the canal towpath part of my commute, stopping to put it back on again as soon as I have to cycle on the road - of course the helmet might actually be effective if I was to have an accident on the canal towpath, but probably wouldn't make much difference if I had an accident on the road...

Without going into the should I wear a helmet or not debate, I've noticed a new trend. Every day I seem to pass more and more cyclists who have their helmet attached to their handlebars, round their seat post, banging off their top tube or attached to a bag.

This morning, I came across someone cycling uphill one handed with their helmet in their other hand.

Has anyone else come across this weird trend? Surely cant be as safe as wearing a helmet (or not carrying one)
