@sallyhinch. I agree that you quickly don't notice the squirrely feeling on the Brompton. I push mine quite hard (although probably not as hard as Uberuce might) and I like the lively steering.

The odd thing for me is going back to my other bike with its heavy 700c wheels with 35mm Marathon Plus on them after a few days on the Brompton. For the first few hundred metres I can feel the gyroscopic effect of the big heavy front wheel that resists my attempts to steer it. It's extremely palpable!

@Uberuce - the squirrely feel wears off after a while (although I don't push my Brompton anything like as hard as you're likely to). I was impressed by SRD's folder as riding like a big bike from the get go though.

I'm likely to be moving outside the bypass in the next few months, so folders are looking more relevant.

I'm yet to ride a small folder (Bromptons, a Birdy and Dahons) that didn't feel like it had a Scotty inside screaming its doom at the slightest hint of performance cycling. They ride like you're at the top of a shoogly ladder.

I have, however, been impressed by the larger wheel variety and the separable ilk, by which I mean I've ridden LaidBack and Eddie's Airnimals, one of chdot's Moultons and I think I had a shot on biketrain's Montague. They just feel like bikes.

The downside is they will never fold up as small or as fast as a Brom, but if I'm only needing it to fit inside a car boot or to scrunch enough that I can chance my arm on an already 2-biked train, then they look more of a fit.

So, Duncan, if you spot a bargain of the larger fold variety while you're looking for your niche, give me a nudge?

I have been looking for a 3 or 6 speed also; I thought it would be nice to take on the Edinburgh bus or in the car. They seem to hold their value well. With the cycle to work scheme it appears I can get a new one for much what can get a used one for. I am a lower rate tax payer used one seem around £600 plus, for bikes with no issues.

I looked at copies made in china that can buy on line but they don’t get the best reviews. Although there are other folding bikes, do they fold small enough to fit on the bus and are they any good. The Brompton is meant to ride ok, some folders sound quite rubbish looking at reviews.

I'm on the lookout for a second-hand 6-speed Brompton bike. (Ideally M6R) The internet seems to be full of scammers (beware the reason for selling, 'because I'm leaving the country'...)
Does anyone in Edinburgh have a Brompton in reasonable condition lurking unused beneath the stairs you are willing to part with? - happy to pay what it's worth.
