CONCLUSIONS

Research shows that cycle use and ownership are both increasing (ownership more rapidly than use) and these two variables are to some extent independent.

Recreational use is increasing and a higher proportion of professional and managerial sectors of the population are taking up cycling as a recreational activity.
To some extent, this is linked to the increase in mountain bike sales.

It is unclear as yet as to whether mountain bikes will continue to hold their present market share. A downturn is more likely but promotion by the trade of mountain bikes and fashionable clothing have all contributed to the changing image of cycling from that of the keen cyclist out in all weathers to an acceptable and popular recreational activity.

The recent upsurge in concern for health, fitness and the environment has also promoted the status of the cycle as a means of good, enjoyable exercise which does not pollute the atmosphere.

It is forecast that whilst general cycle use may remain fairly constant, recreational use is likely to increase significantly.
