We're all different of course, but Queensferry Road between Barnton and Blackhall is generally the most straightforward and hassle-free part of my commute.

I find that very surprising - but do note I'm not saying you're wrong! I hate that part of the road to cycle along. I've taken recently to going along St Johns Road / Corstorphine Road instead of Queensferry Road to get to work. It's an extra 1.5 miles, but only takes me about 2 minutes longer and is significantly more pleasant because I have a bus lane largely all to myself.

Motorists routinely well behaved if you're assuming primary and pacing at over 30 kilometres per hour.

That said I do tend to commute outwith the rush hour gridlock to avoid the excess pollution.

I'd go with "Big K" Kenny's route.

Not as direct, but likely to by much lower stress and long sections with no traffic lights.

Not according to my measuring on Cyclestreets. Queensferry road was over 1/4 of a mile shorter.

Queensferry Road route adds an extra 1/2 mile, so not most direct. Could be quicker though depending on junctions.

It's marginal but the most direct route looks like the Queensferry Road.

Not sure this counts as advice, but the more direct route is down to Ratho station, then along the A8 path (or on road) and through Corstorphine, Murrayfield, etc.

Not a terribly attractive alternative, but there are grreenways. You could divert slightly via the off-road paths from South Gyle, Carrick Knowe onwards: not fast but certainly quieter.

Another alternative to A90 is to take the NEPN round to Roseburn, then via Haymarket or cross over to Dundee Street, Gilmore Place, Tollcross, Meadows and down the Pleasance to Holyrood Road.

Maybe turn off to Drumsheugh or Melville to get to Palmerston or Manor Places, thence to Torphichen, then either to Morrison/Bread/West Port/Cowgate/etc. or Morrison/Bread/Spittal/Johnston/Lawmarket/etc. or Morrison/Bread/Spittal/Lady Lawson/West Port/Lauriston Street/Place to avoid the Cowgate, though it's better going east in the morning than in the evening.

Is there a sensible way to avoid this junction or get across it without being a bit "naughty"?

There's no avoiding it..

Coming off Queensferry Street, if the lights are green heading along Princes St then I'll make the "naughty" right turn into Lothian Road, otherwise its the ped-crossings-on-one-pedal routine..

Either way its unsatisfactory infrastructure

Alternatively, have you thought of heading south on to the canal and then come in at Fountainbridge, then through the Meadows and down Holyrood Park (or Pleasance).

I'm currently commuting from Kirkliston to Holyrood Road by following the A90 Queensferry Road, Queensferry Street, Lothian Road, Grassmarket, Cowgate route which whilst busy is quick and direct. However it always goes a bit wrong at the Queensferry Street, Shandwick Place, Princes Street, Lothian Road junction where you end up jumping on/ off pavements/ pedestrian crossings.

Is there a sensible way to avoid this junction or get across it without being a bit "naughty"?
