I use these -

http://www.homebase.co.uk/en/homebaseuk/universal-hook---2-pack-164646

(But it helps to have conventional timber joists not too far above head height.)

what about just hooks? Have you got decent joists?

I don't think a pulley would work so well as the ceiling isn't high (but thanks for the offer algo). You can get a bike standing vertically but not a huge amount more. I was wondering about making something like the Velogrip at http://velogrip.com/home/products/

A scaffold pole and some wall mounts would make the rail and I'm sure it wouldn't be hard to find suitable hooks

I have one of said Aldi/Lidl pulley things you can have if you like - its construction doesn't inspire a huge amount of confidence but I am over-cautious. I went for one of the bolt-to-the-wall varieties that wingpig mentions. If you are not too bothered about the pulley system - perhaps if accessing certain bikes will not be a very frequent occurrence and you are happy to stand on steps then I'd get some decent strong triangular brackets welded up - it'll not cost you that much. I did some for my folks - I am a terrible welder so I won't offer to do it for you, but I know a man who could quite easily….

Lidl also sells sets of pulleys. Our two have been working well, but in a garage, maybe just some hooks on the ceiling would be easier?

Both Aldi and Lidl have done things which run from floor to ceiling with protruding rail-hooks, supporting either one or two bikes per protrusion, or bolt-individually-to-the-wall pairs of cantilevered hooks with purported space for three bikes (three indentations on the hooks, anyway - don't think I'd habitually stick that much on them); one of the latter is currently being tested by my parents and has so far supported an old steel-framed MTB and a heavyish folder without complaint on the two indentations closest to the wall. If there's sufficient vertical space for a pulley I'd maybe stick the one or two you work on most frequently on a pair of them, so that thay're more accessible for maintenance, with four against the wall in two pairs.

We are looking to increase the number of bikes we own in the near future and will likely need space to store up to 6 bikes securely within a garage. We could clear some garage wall space and there is a fairly large central area as we don't use it for a car.

Any comments on the best way to store multiple bikes? I'm thinking some sort of vertical wall hanger may be the best option.
