If I had applied they would only have found out I didn't have a car at interview. I would have wasted their time and mine and taken up a place which could have gone to another candidate. I'm not that altruistic though, in truth I didn't want to prepare for an interview for a job I didn't qualify for and I doubt they would have given the job to a candidate who beat them up over their travel policy, all things being equal. The post was an ICT support worker for an organisation supporting third sector groups across East Lothian. There are certainly places that are hard to reach in EL by public transport and/or bike. But ICT is usually office based.

+1 for chdot's comments. I was expecting you to say you applied and that they had rebuffed you for not having a car. If you hadn't enquired, then it's entirely reasonable to say you do have transport. The fact that they possibly mean something other than what they said is their problem!

This is a 'common' requirement. It doesn't actually say car/van.

Key things are -

How much travelling does the job involve?

How much stuff would you have to transport?

I couple of weeks ago I was completing an application for a part-time job here in Musselburgh when I spotted an item in the person spec "essentials" column: "must have own transport". As it was immediately preceded by the essential "must have clean driving license" (I do and have had since I passed my test in 1985) I assumed it to mean a car.

I was well qualified for the job but I don't have a car. So after a couple of days mulling over the salary minus the cost of a car I decided not to apply. I remain fairly miffed about it though.

Has anyone else come across this?
