Aye it was great fun though somewhat hampered by my lack of local knowledge yet. I had Google Maps in one ear giving me "directions" and street signs often telling me the opposite. Once I saw cycle routes with Leith on them I tried to stick to that for preference - more than anything so I could make myself familiar with the quiet routes for later use.

The ride down to Granton was Google Maps' fault but I have done the ride up Granton Road before and found it an enjoyable hill to do fixed. Once I knew where I was I just started ignoring the directions again and followed my nose home.

Following the annotated map on Strava this morning I can see where I went wrong but at the time I was quite bewildered

Had a look at your route on Strava. If your preference is to stay on cycle paths, then you have the potential for a glorious route on said paths almost all the way to your work from Silverknowes, which is where I think things went a bit wrong for you yesterday:

That was some detour you took to Granton, though! Good effort on a fixie!

Many of these stickers now say Yes, No or Naw (three different stickers that is)

I did my first full-length commute last night (not letting the train take the strain). I was fine until I got into town and started following cycle route 1. And lost it. And found it again. And then joined a different route along a shared path which disappeared into nothing. Following the annotated map on Strava this morning I can see where I went wrong but at the time I was quite bewildered.

@dougal

It's so that hard-pressed motorists aren't accidentaly lured into making determined progress on cycle facilities where their paintwork and suspension are at risk.

Why must the little blue stickers with a red route number be so small? Why are they always hidden inside bushes?

I have to basically conclude that you have to already know the route you're taking before you can take it so the signs are redundant.
