Population projections at this level are very unlikely to be correct. Particularly as people may respond to the projections.

those with interest might like to check out Prof John Hattie and his Visible Learning Project. He has amassed all meta-analyses since the stone was rolled back in the garden.

He therefore has an effect size for any type of intervention.

Class size egffect size is 0.21

A grade improvement in GCSE is effect size 0.5

Prof Hattie;'s visible learning (e.g. pupils being given good feedbackon their performance) ranges between 1.13 and 1.4 effect size

Of course the bigger class sizes are often also found in more affluent areas.

When I worked in W Hailes some classes in P1 were down about 14-18. This has crept up and schools are doing well but still not aware of placing requests being made for them.

Snowy - picture mixed across Edinburgh. P1 intake goes over a tipping point and school will flip to two P1 and a p1/2 composite or three P1 but if going the other way then back down to two P1 classes. If tips into the three class zone then often lots of out of catchment placing requests are granted.

Marchmont/sciences/bruntsfield very susceptible to this out of catchment scenario. Less popular schools sitting with empty classes or smaller class sizes.

Godzik said at a recent meeting that as far as southside is concerned, they haven't got the £9m required to build the new primary school that the southside needs in order to accomodate rising rolls. Also that while there is speculation that it might be built on land purchased from the NHS Astley Ainslie, in fact there had been no discussions or negotiations to that effect.

No sweat, right? Not an urgent issue at all.

P1 intake at Gillespie's in 2012: 60 kids.
P1 intake at Gillespie's in 2014: 90 kids.

Presume picture is similar in other parts of the city.
