Dublin cycling is a bit mad in the centre, but then Dublin traffic is a bit mad generally.

I haven't been to Dublin for a few years but when I did go, the thing which stood out the most for me is that it looked to be, by far and away the worst possible place for cycling I had ever seen. I am gobsmacked that this seems to have been turned around somehow.

@IWRATS there weren't many helmets being worn in Dublin (although that is a contentious issue of course), but I can't say that many people were even wearing wolly hats.

Clearly all of the infrastructure shown in the videos is in place somewhere in Dublin, although I didn't see all that many properly segregated lanes in the central areas and northern suburbs where I was based. Where I did see them, they often didn't continue for long or join up to anything obvious. Those films are nice though, and can only help to encourage people to consider cycling, and the addition of a city cycle scheme would definitely help to make a difference as well if we ever end up getting one in Edinburgh.

I worked with a really nice contractor from Dublin a few years back. He used to routinely cycle the wrong way up Lothian road in the dark with no lights. Fell off once and said he was 'really glad he had his woolly hat on to cushion the blow'.

There's a stoical fatalism about the Irish that we have yet to master.

I was in Dublin over the weekend and was intrigued and slightly horrified by the approach to cycling... There were a lot of cyclists out and about on the streets so that is great, but I was quite amazed by how many of them were cycling without lights after dark, heading through red lights at junctions, cycling the wrong way along one way streets (in some cases in the middle of several opposing lanes of traffic), or popping up and down from pavements as they saw fit.

A good number of people were making use of the city hire bikes, and I kind of regret not doing so myself because it was only 5 Euros to sign up for three days and trips up to half an hour in length are free. The vehicular traffic is extremely heavy in places in the city centre though, which was rather offputting, yet everyone just seemed to be getting on with it; there were hardly any cases of motorists sounding their horns at the mad cyclists.

The infrastructure was remarkably varied, with really nice sections of cycle-specific path in places leading to absolutely nothing along some of the busiest roads.
