I'm told that there's good strategic reasons for having a deputy convenor of the SNP (which is the post in contention) in Westminster. If Nicola needs a deputy first minister (which is not at all required) at Holyrood, Swinney could do that (a damned sight better than Brown, who is a noted stickler and bore).

So, no, maybe not a new transport minister. Sadly.

Actually, there are plenty of areas that particularly affect veterans that are devolved responsibilities : health, housing, employability, to name a few.

the SG only created a veterans Minister so it could annoy the UK Government on military matters

Entirely possible that role will disappear under a new First Minister.

I would have thought Stewart Hosie would be a better deputy leader for the SNP. Then again, not my party. Still, it would send a signal about intentions re: Westminster.

If, as seems likely, Nicola Sturgeon will be the new First Minister then I hope she does reshuffle. Indeed Keith Brown standing for deputy leader may be a signal he expects to lose his ministerial role. Richard Lochhead might be a good replacement.

If Scotland had voted for independence last week, Keith Brown would have made a credible Defence Minister.

Yes, but the SG only created a veterans Minister so it could annoy the UK Government on military matters - which are entirely reserved. It just looks better to have an ex-military type in that role. I imagine the veterans portfolio will stick with Keith Brown, wherever he goes.

Knowledge or interest <strike>in transport</strike> doesn't really come into it.
FTFY

It would be interesting to see if he keeps the post in a reshuffle as that would give an idea of whether Nicola thought his two-facery was a good thing.

Perhaps, but wasn't this why "veterans" were strangely combined with Transport, given Concrete Browns' interest in military affairs?

Assuming he does win (not likely, if someone like Richard Lochhead does actually stand) then its anyone's guess. Ministerial posts are handed out by the FM. I assume Nicola would have a reshuffle - the first major one of this government. Given that transport is a fairly junior post that tends to get combined with other subjects (currently veterans, previously housing) it is likely to go to one of the current junior ministers or a more senior backbencher - possibly as a reward for loyalty to Nicola.

Knowledge or interest in transport doesn't really come into it.

I'd be shocked if any replacement was less cooperative with "our" aims than Keith "Spare Bridge" Brown.

Keith "2 more lanes" Broon is standing for the SNP Deputy Leader job, given Nicola Sturgeon is standing for Leader.

Will that mean a new Transport Minister. Anyone any idea of likely candidates if he does get the bigger job? Could it be a more or less cooperative* Minister?

* from "our" point of view, that is, not more cooperative with people who want to build bypasses.
