Lost my post, but the issue I worried about before was approaching cyclists being too quick to enter the crossing for drivers to react (given the current rules to cede priority to those on the crossing).

Although I note that the pictured site has a right angle approach to slow cyclists (and make using the crossing more difficult!).

Given the lines, it looks like the cycle track is just a normal "give way to the major road" situation, however crossing pedestrians could bring the main road traffic to a halt and thus make it easier to get out...

From the discussion on Twitter, it seems the give way lines for bikes reflect the current legal situation (you can ride across a zebra but you don't have priority). Apparently this may change next year

"Tiger Crossings" seem to be shared cycle and pedestrian crossings where they have priority, mentioned in Wikipedia and TfL document, but not much detail.

Sally - although there are give-way lines for the cyclists before crossing, the give-way lines for vehicles before the zebra are also before the cycle part, in the pic on deaddogblog.

I was clearly kind of conflating this with a toucan crossing. Blame it on the 3yo distracting me....

or i was just being aspirational. i'd really like to see cycling clearly identified on toucans, and i'd like to see us allowed to cross zebras.

The give way lines would imply priority to both streams - although the greater speed of bikes might make that difficult for drivers to anticipate. That said, the fact that it's coming off a shared use pavement (which has meant it's come in for some criticism on twitter) should mean the bikes would be going fairly slowly (and besides, most cars won't stop for a zebra anyway unless you step into the road and do your best impression of someone who won't be intimidated by anyone)

UPDATED to add - looking at it again, it looks like it's the bikes that have the give way lines. So it is just a formalisation of the situation with zebra crossings now

@SRD Presumably in the one you show a picture of, the bikes don't actually have any form of priority. Whereas the cars must give way to pedestrians, the cyclists will have to wait until there's a gap in the traffic.

I suppose your point is, though, that on a signalled toucan crossing, the cyclists should have a different 'lane' from pedestrians.

A sort of zebra-meets-Toucan crossing? I think it's time we reclaimed the name. :-)

The original Panda Crossing was installed in 1962, but it was an 'absurdly complicated' death trap according to pedestrians, and was replaced by the Pelicon.
