The Electric Brae works both ways.

Yes, southbound is up but looks down. I prefer it northbound because you do appear to freewheel up the hill. I didn't do that way yesterday as I was under the lash to get to Maybole before they closed the A77 for the gala day parade.

gembo, I just bought the toolkit (at mother in laws, plenty left in Stirling Aldi !).

I used the freewheel remover / chainwhip from a mates set a few months ago and was suitably impressed enough to shell out the £14.99 this time.

Metals feel pretty robust, almost worth it for the multi tool / chainwhip / freewheel tool on their own.

Very strong overlap between macaroon centre and mint cake. Again both retain their coherence even after hours in rucksacks or pockets. I can eat a wee bit of it which might be the point, I t will last til the end. I could eat all of a macaroon bar.

I am always flummoxed by the electric brae. Does the illusion work when on bicycle.? Heading south you are going up hill but think you are going downhill is that right? Then heading north back to Ayr you think you are going uphill but can freewheel up the hill from a stopped position because you are actually going downhill? Or does it only work going south?

Hope you made it in and out of maybole safely. A person once drove their car into the chippy in maybole, could they not have queued like everyone else?

I don't like mint cake. Well… I didn't like it in the '70s which was the last time I tried it. GoOutdoors sell it. Perhaps I should give it another chance. I find Macaroons fill that niche.

I took a Virb Elite camera on the Electric Brae yesterday. I was going to Maybole so heading up the hill. It recorded a gain of 10 m and it's still going up well south of the lay-by where people stop to let their car roll backwards.

Interesting that it isn't noreen or Doreen? They sell their own version of lurpak as norpak. But have also gone with brands, such as Williams Bros. beers.

Is soreen associated with cycling for reasons other than it doesn't get
Any squidgier than it already is when shoved In your back pocket or saddle bag? Does the malt loaf give greater energy than the mint cake for walkers?

Socks look good and track pump. If you are low on either? A pal gave me their toolkit. Never used it. Had a chain whip in it. Probably a little flimsy?

I have adjusted the brakes cable a few times, I last adjusted the brakes on Saturday I may have been pulling too hard because brakes were not adjusted which could have weaked the quick release thing may be.

I got my bike the end of June have done around 750 miles but used the brakes a lot when got it as my first bike and the hill coming out of Balerno is quite steep.

With Evans bike you get a free service but when I asked in the shop they said to book it on line. Their web site seems hard to do this all it seems to do is direct is to a phone number so never did, I am guessing it’s too long ago for that as would be 3 and a half months about.

I assume these sort of things are not covered by warranty I think I recall the gears are exempt. Not quite sure how this would figure under sale of goods act but by the time "lawyered it" with complaints etc etc" even if agreed and they book it in weeks away etc be quicker to do it my self.

Evans seems like a car dealer very quick easy to buy a bike and things but not so sure about their repairs side would imagine quite slow, clunky bureaucratic processes.

Just went there because I knew nothing about bikes and being a large national chain would not get totally bumped, the downside would not get as good after sales as a small independent I imagine, was a risk averse option a safe option, seems an ok bike for the money generally quite satisfactory, has not broken down yet this is the first part to break.

I went to Halfords at lunch as I have a voucher at home, they have Clarks front brake thing that will fit.

@Ed1 your gear cables have probably stretched and need adjusting, have they ever been done since you got it?

Its a very good idea to keep the bike clean as much as possible. I try to do mine at least once a month over summer and every fortnight over winter. Focus especially on the drivetrain and brakes (my calipers have seized up a couple of times).

I get 2-3k miles out of a set of pads, but I guess a lot of this is down to where you ride, conditions and a number of other factors.

When I was in Aldi muscleborough a few weeks ago they had tool box kits for £20. As my bike needs a new brakeset I am wondering if will need some tools. Also I should possibly start doing some maintenance on my bike as has down over 700 miles and brakepads worn,a few squeaks and things, top gear number 7 right struggles to engage sometimes.

Is there any tools box kits left in Aldi any where?
