more removed from Edinburgh :D

That sounds like posh Edinburgh talk, like ;)

I see we have a friend on the EN comments section. Well said Tumshie Heid!

tumshie heid,
16/12/2009 12:30:16
Could I be the first to post a totally irrelevant rant about cyclists riding on pavements, having no in surance and not paying "road tax"?
There thats got the ball rolling, let the idiocy commence.

Laid back said,
I was born in Glasgow. You can't get further away from Edinburgh than that;)

Shouldn't that be more removed from Edinburgh :D

I am guilty as charged of going to Edinburgh Uni (originally from Leeds) and staying afterwards. Unfortunately work has taken me south again to Cambridge - hence the offer to find an iPod programmer - still working on that one. They are very busy here....

And again the commenters have gone into anti-cyclist overdrive!

Apparently we get 'money for nothing' as cyclists. I wish someone would tell me where I can get this from...

"I do often wonder how many of the commuters I pass are actually born and bred in Edinburgh.

Now there's a question...

Edinburgh certainly has a fair number of people who came to University/college and never left.

Obviously most of the people I know do cycle. Some born, some bred, some educated, some passing through.

Highlights the need for schools to do more. Council has put racks in almost all schools, but only around 25% of children get Cycle Training.

Only three primaries make sure all children do the training (in school time.)

Yes, I would recommend the site, but I know virtually no one who cycles in Edin, which is why I've been enjoying the advice/chat here. Again, when we were down south, everyone of all ages cycled, and it was no big deal. Here, everyone thinks we're nuts. (I swear, people think I'm crazier for cycling here than they did in Harare, Zim). The only committed cyclists I've met in the past 6 years, are neighbours since we moved to Polwarth, who are all post-retirement, and tell great stories of cycling here in the 50s/60s and setting up Spokes etc. The few people I know who cycle to work are also all southerners. I do often wonder how many of the commuters I pass are actually born and bred in Edinburgh.

This is a great tool. I've used it around Cambridge and it beats the other route planners I've used which have pedestrians and cyclists in mind.

I have a collegue who know a couple of Software Engineers and I'll give him a nudge about asking them about an iPod app.

These Apps can be quite lucrative for the author as they get a percentage of all downloads. Cycle Streets would have to ensure they own the IP and have the author on a PAYG basis.

I've used before for Bike Friday and just went back to see how it handled two routes I do a lot in town.

Answers were exactly as I would suspect. So very good when pitted against local knowledge.

Only variance could be on things such as right turns off quite busy roads. Road surface etc.

But I think that it also displays enough detail to let people make informed decisions.

People should enjoy getting direct routes and looking at variants Fast / balanced / quiet.

I'd say that forumers should have a look at their own commute and see what they think.

I suspect that it might even flag up some routes you weren't aware of. So a chance to explore!

A lot of work has been put in and sure they'd enjoy feedback.

As per my other post about cycling in Glasgow, my first, rather tentative use of this site was totally successful - although I wish their map printed to a pdf or similar. I ended up printing out a googlemap and highlighting the route I wanted. But still, I will definitely use again and recommend.

CycleStreets is the premiere UK-wide Cycle Journey Planner. It got a boost last year when Edinburgh based ChangingPace (interest declared) got Scottish Government money to help create the Edinburgh version.

Cambridge based CycleStreets (created by people involved in the Cambridge Cycling Campaign) is looking for help -

Write us an iPhone app!

"We'd love to have an iPhone version of CycleStreets, but we don't have the code expertise yet. Quite a tall order, we know, particularly as we don't (currently) have funding!"
