Those are 'the reasons', but is there any more info on 'value for money' or the ToB part?

I'm not enough of a policy wonk to dig any deeper into it. And how do you define "value"? I expect at bottom the judgement is based on what has been done in the past. The committee is made up of counsellors so it becomes politics.

The decision to support a bid for the Pearl Izumi series was agreed because it meets Strategic Outcome CO20 and Pledge P24.
P24 - Maintain and embrace support for our world-famous festivals and events.
CO20 – Culture, sport and major events – Edinburgh continues to be a leading cultural city where culture and sport play a central part in the lives and futures of citizens.
Neither of these is a transport matter so it's unlikely that the money is coming from transport budgets as it would if ATAP had been cited for example. This is all a Culture and Sport issue.

"Hope they don't take all the money to pay for it out of the cycling budget"

Hope they don't take ANY.

This is sport with bicycles (and/or 'economic development'/bread and circuses) nothing to do with QBiCs and Family Networks.

Hope they don't take all the money to pay for it out of the cycling budget - although I doubt there'd be enough in it to repair all the roads they'd be using PLUS pay for the organisation etc ;-)

"

Councillors are now being asked to agree funding of £250,000 to hold two stages of the Tour of Britain and one stage of the Pearl Izumi Tour Series.

If the plans are approved, the council will work with Tour of Britain organisers to identify a cycling route through the city.

"

Presumably for the PI that's the Grassmarket/GivB?

For the ToB I wonder if CEC expects it to remain within the city boundary?

Perhaps 'we' should devise a route that includes the most potholes...

However this isn't about 'cycling', it's sport being used for 'economic development'.

Some councillors will see it as 'more money for cycling' and some drivers will think it's just 'more cyclists in my way'.

A marathon isn't about encouraging 'active travel' - and for all the publicity given to (attracting) 'the world's best athletes' they are participatory events.

I'm not against sport/these events, just hope CEC doesn't try to proclaim it as part of its 'commitment to cycling'.

At a time when the council is asking for help in setting priorities/balancing the books, I just hope there are some very sound figures for justifying spending £1/4m.

They'd have to mend the roads otherwise the opening stages of the TdF would crumble in a pile of bodies and bikes as the cream of the worlds male road cycling crop smash headlong into craters.

I saw this in the Scotsman on Friday. Sounds like it's a done deal - unless the council decide they don't want to spend the money.

Just heard Richard Lewis saying. Edinburgh's bidding for 2 stages of the tour of Britain (or possibly that he is asking Council to agree this today? )
