So i went for a look at this...

arrived about 11.50, the secure bike parking (wich looked abandonded) was a row of crowd barrier type fences with a couple of fallorn looking MTBs locked to them, not an attendant in sight, and no DR bike :( And i need to get my bell tightened too.

After that letdown i had to race the pontiff! (appologies for double posting :P )

Wow 5% off a coffee what an incentive!! We should welcome right wing homophobes into our city more often.

I really hope this works though. It would be great to see an army of cycling commuters but I suspect all we'll get is tailbacks as people just take their cars regardless.

Story I heard is that he has a pal in Churchhill and he is going to be stopping in for a cup of tea (then presumably heading off down Morningside Road).
if this is true (and why on earth shouldn't it be?) then I bet said pal wishes he'd invited pope over a long time ago if it meant he'd get a new road out of it.

Pretty bad job too. "

I agree. I obviously hadn't put two and two together and thought 'pope' when I saw work being done at the bottom of the hill the other day. In fact I was dismayed to realise that they were just doing a wee fix up job around a manhole cover rather than resurface /the entire road/ as is required.

Cycling down Morningside Road actually gives me a sore head.

It's really quite amazing. First CEC finds the money to resurface (really quite nicely) Churchhill, and now it's been sending out the emergency pothole fillers to Morningside Road. The same road chdot and I travel so frequently and which is worse than George Street is now sporting a whole load of big black patches of sort-of-tarmac, which at least has made the 30mph freewheel a little more comfortable. I thought, as I rode home, about what to include in a FoI request about why they couldn't have done it sooner and without the remarkable coincidence of the man in white visiting the city.

Sideways rant aside, well done to The Bike Station for arranging a huge dollop of common sense! :)

Spitfire, I agree. I normally think the EEN comments are a cess-pit but for once some of them have been quite funny. I liked the one the other day which suggested that the combination of the Pope's visit and the potential for the tram sitting on Princes Street to prevent people from getting a good view would cause an EEN comments "perfect storm".

On the 16th September, Edinburgh will be visited by Pope Benedict XVI, resulting in many road closures throughout the city.

To enable a quick commute to work in the city centre, the Bike Station has teamed up with Essential Edinburgh to provide all day secure cycle parking in St Andrew Square!

You'll be able to leave your bike securely locked up from 8am to 6pm.

Dr Bike will be there from 8am to 12pm to fix minor problems such as brakes and gear cables on your bike, and the coffee shop in St Andrew Square will offer a 5% discount to anyone who uses Dr Bike!

Don't let the road closures stop you from getting to work on the 16th!
