While looking for Bikezac suppliers, I found Velo Vitality shop, which stocks a bunch of interesting rack mounted rear lights:

* Ikzi Pannier Rack Light, reduced to £4. Uses 2xAAA.
* Spanninga Solo, £15. Good for Bromptons.
* Spanninga Brasa, £16. Stylish and slightly 1950s looking.

bah!

Now they tell me they'd already sold out of the lezyne lights. i'd put them in my basket earlier, but then their website crashed (or so it seemed to me) and i had to start over.

humbug.

Thanks Arellcat. I've ordered a Moon Comet front light for the tandem. had another Cateye die from water ingress, so am done with them. and some lezyne zectos for the road bike.

Tulyar was raving about his new USE lights that are smaller than wine bottle corks. Impressively bright but I did wonder about the run time.

EBC has the Moon Meteor which road.cc says was "A cracking little light that punches well above its weight and price." They also thought the Gem 2.0 was good for emergency use but short on run time.

I don't know much about Lezyne lights but road.cc reckons the Zecto is worth the higher price.

(OT: I see they also have the Schwalbe Ice Spiker in the sale. Keen price!)

I got a good back light that uses the reflector mounts on the mudguard. The Torch "Tail Bright Fender" was at that time available from a variety of internet places at prices from £6 to £22. Guess which one I went for. I've yet to fit the second one to the tandem but the one on the solo is fine.

It seems to give an adequately bright 1 watt light.

I always imagined a CatEye TL-AU100BS would be mudguardable, though never tried - they'd be a bit heavy, as there's a fair bit of waggle even with the relatively light B&M Seculite+, which encouraged a couple of SKS guards to snap just aft of the rearmost stay bridge.

I have a Toplite Line Plus (B+M) and I'm very pleased with it. It runs off a dynamo and the stand light lasts for many minutes.

+1 it's been a long time since I bothered with the mega flasher lights (just on the recumbent since that doesn't have either a seatpost or a rack).

I guess there are different schools of design. Point source of ever-increasing brightness (drivers can only see the brightest thing in their field of view?), or larger cross section to tie in with the way everything else on the road is lit up.

The first time I drove up behind someone with the Philips dynamo rack light I thought I was overtaking a scooter. It was a bit confusing until I saw their pedals going up and down...

Generally excellent and bright, but can be a bit fiddly to switch on and off/scroll through modes with a gloved hand. Also, don't be clumsy when unplugging the recharge seal! Easy to attach and remove with a thick rubber strap.

Colin, I've not got a dynamo (yet) but tbh from experience I think I'd prefer a battery rear, running cables just gets messy. I can't find the Moon one though.

Cherry bomb on the helmet, glow stick on your jersey, wheel lights. Something that fixes to the cArradice? But the rack light probably best single source? See also all of the above for multiple less intense sources.

Are any of these very bright? From my cursory research they seem to be 5mm emitters behind a defuser.

I'm having a luggage/lighting incompatibility. With my carradice in place I don't have any seat post for what is now a normal rear light with the rack on my new CDF I don't have much space to mount one on the seat stays. The obvious answer is the rack but none of them seam nearly as bright as a seat post option.

I've discovered that there is a new Infini Apollo rack mounted light. In fact there are three models:

I-501R, which has a 0.5W LED, looks very B&Mish and has 'a standlight'.
I-500P, which has a 0.5W LED, and light and motion sensors with a 4-minute standlight.
I-500R, which has a lower powered LED for longer run time, but otherwise as the I-500P.

"mega-bikes" on ebay.de has the I-501R for sale for €16 plus postage (but only two of them). Also, "victoria-cycles" on UK eBay has the I-501R for sale for £15 with free postage (10 or more available)—but strangely titles it as "Infini Apollo Dynamo 0.5w LED Carrier Rack Tail Light Unit". Infini's website says nothing about dynamos, but says everything about AAs. If I hadn't just made a bracket to mount my old Cateye LD600 to my rack, I'd be looking very hard in Infini's direction again.

thanks for the advice folks: Most 'rack type fittings' don't work on the blackburn. annoyingly, we have just replaced it only to have the copilot seat either blow away or be stolen. The seat was on its last legs, so not a huge deal, but odd. if we'd known we were going to lose it, we could have put a different rack on.

@cycleservice - we'll monitor it and see what's up...thanks for the help though!

SRD, is there no way you can mount a Cherrybomb?

It has both clip and a rack type fitting.

Currently around £15.99 and very bright, very reliable (2 years all weathers bouncing around on my Carradice) and my rechargable batteries last a very long time.

I'd definitely still recomment the battery-powered B&M toplight line. At least you know it's gone through some testing to get the German approval...

i like the light, but gotta say i'm unlikely to buy anything from RSP again given these two experiences.

RSP - these could be better products. The old RSP rack light has failed waterproof test on the forum before (SRD, Min) although new packaging suggests latest version is now waterproof. That might just be the packaging though... !

RSP Meson looks like a Cateye copy. rrp suggest they'd like £20. Sells for as low as £10. Sadly these items are viewed as disposable. I don't blame CS as lights are going to get even cheaper and no longer a specialist item (unless you're a student cycling home from the pub!)
