Given the concentration of physics genius in pre-war Germany and that some of the scientists stayed it was reasonable to suspect that the Nazis would be pursuing a nuclear bomb. A bit like Saddam's WMD.

If memory serves, I think they were trying but a long way off success by the end of the war. It's thankfully ironic that the purging of Jewish physicists and the ideological view of quantum mechanics as somehow Jewish helped hold them back.

@Insto, that sounds an interesting read too.

Maybe this thread should be "CCE Book Club"? ;-)

On Einstein, seems he did in fact warn Roosevelt that Germany might develop an atom bomb and recommended the US pursue research in this area.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Einstein–Szilárd_letter

Oh, anyone recall the Robert Wilson / Philip Glass opera 'Einstein on the Beach'?

http://www.barbican.org.uk/theatre/event-detail.asp?ID=11928

Also I remember watching a Nic Roeg film with a scene where Einstein frolics with a Hollywood starlet bearing a passing resemblance to Marilyn.

I often try to meditate but it doesn't last long. It just turns into sleep. But that's just as good.

I read a nice book once that told the same stories in different ways using different concepts of the relationship between space and time. Einstein's Dreams. Or there's the biography of Einstein by Walter Isaacson, who also did a good biography of Steve Jobs.

@crowriver I remember the series may have been called Oppenheimer however

Einstein can't be classed as witless
He said atoms were the little-est
Then he did some splittin'emness
Scaring everybody shittiless

Of course the fact that ian dury was God, does not mean his analysis of the A bomb was accurate.

Will be interested in your view as I was kind of trying to not be negative whilst being realistic after having skimmed it. It is very nicely presented. Nice paper etc. But less than the sum of its parts.

Could also mention at this point The Manhattan Transfer. The acapella group named after the Jon Dos Passos novel. But then you would be singing Chanson D'amour yad de dad de dad all day long and thinking of their triumph on the Mike Yarwood show in 1975

@gembo, this review gives a very different flavour to the book from the one you conjured.

http://boneshakermag.com/einstein-the-art-of-mindful-cycling/

I must say that, on longer rides like audaxes, cycling does become a bit like meditation (or rather what I imagine it must be like, as I have never practised it).

I've ordered a copy of the book and will draw conclusions accordingly once read.

I don't hold Einstein responsible for the A-bomb. That was Oppenheimer and his team, wasn't it? I recall watching a plausible BBC drama series about it in the 1980s (though of course that doesn't prove anything).

@crowriver - you cycle and enjoy it. Do you meditate or do yoga or Pilates or Alexander technique? You don't hold Einstein responsible for Manhattan project?

Basically when meditating your mind wanders which is alright. You just notice this and bring yourself back to your breathing or however you do meditation, or yoga, Pilates, Alexander technique.

My best ever go at meditating was using a little prayer stool to kneel which was just three bits of wood, no padding and a new fluffy ikea blanket to rest me knees on. My anchor to bring me back to the breathing was my thigh muscles being stretched. However the prevalent image of Einstein on a bicycle printed throughout the slim volume might do the trick.

If all of this is giving you the boak, do not purchase. On the other hand if you are interested in meditation it is Ok, dependent on price. Mine was gift so that was nice.

Wordery appears to be the cheapest source for this book. Sounds Q.I. I may procure a copy myself.

Just been sent this by chum in Cambridge where the author lives, hope he got it cost.

Author also cited as founder and editor of journal of modern wisdom and cycle lifestyle.

I think that is bad copy as it might be two journals

We asked a youth mindfulness guru who was giving us a talk at work with added meditation if you could be mindful and cycle quickly he said No
