I'm not entirely convinced that they didn't think the 'bents would be faster. Felt a bit like that section had been put in to explain to the viewer rather than to the two cyclists iyswim.

The seat pads were a weak point in what was otherwise a great design. The tandem weighed only 30kg which is the same as Arellcat's carbon Quest velomobile.

If the weather had stayed dry and less turbulent they'd have slipped under the record even more.

LB uses open weave Ventisit seat pads. These are pretty weather and sweat proof. Water can't collect in them - a Dutch design used on almost all our bikes and trikes. Whole idea is that being comfortable should also help improve performance.

Other thing to remember is that these guys did really well despite having a short time to ride reclined - and being 'non-believers'.

Some people have said to me that it shouldn't stand as the machine was not a tandem in the true sense. Well three wheels do have more road drag so it's all a balance. Whatever you want to call it (was a fully faired recumbent trike) it's still a fantastic achievement. Worth watching - and if anyone wants to try something related from LB they're very welcome.

We are closed this Thursday and Friday though.

I enjoyed it. I hope they changed those seat pads afterwards though.

Guy didn't reckon recumbents were fast - fun watching them disprove this with the help of Mike Burrows and Miles Kingsbury.

Also - I hear that Graeme Obree is going for Beastie Mk 2 with his son piloting.

I have seen Guy race at the TT, but not this program. He stands out even from the other five or six riders who are in actual contention. Not the fastest, but certainly the calmest and the boldest.

That Guy Martin is some man. As one of the engineers on the sledge one said, he's got pretty amazing ability at dealing with high-speed things, but it's not just that he can handle a motorbike: anyone who can do what he did on a pushbike/tandem on this series and last must be quite an athlete too.

<spoiler alert>The thing that most impressed me is how they both seemed to be able to walk away from it at the end. I would have had to be carried out of that trike...

Design input from Mike Burrows* and Miles Kingsbury**. Should be good.

* Of course.
** Looks a bit like Johnny Ball. Designer (with his Dad) of the Kingcycle SWB recumbent as still raced by members of the BHPC, designer of the Bean, Bean II, and Mango—which at Battle Mountain suffered the worst case of speed wobble I've ever seen—and populariser, in Kingsbury K-Drive form, of the 1890 Vietor Elliptical Drive crank system.

Teaser picture shows a side by side fully faired tricycle aka velomobile. On tonight at 8 Channel 4.

"How far can you go in 24 hours by pedal power?". We can assume Guy is not using a Sustrans route.
