You have shamed me. Fourbyfourmageddon is of course correct. Or possibly 4x4mageddon?

"fourbyfourmagedon"

Good coinage. Someone please add this to the CCE glossary. Ta.

(Though it ought to be spelled thusly: "fourbyfourmageddon").

@kaputnik

It could never be a mass-use path. It isn't wide enough for one thing, and a vulnerable person at night might well not feel safe there.

But it's ideal for big ugly eccentrics like me. I love the baffled looks from people waiting for the bus at Myreside Court as you hop the kerb and vanish down a rabbit hole. And I love not being exposed to the fourbyfourmagedon at the entrance to Watsons - seeing that is not good for the soul.

I've only ever walked it, and not even that for a while, but, if I remember, I'll re-evaluate next time I'm near.

Unfortunate reality of unsurfaced paths in a wet climate like ours is that the more popular they become with cyclists (or even pedestrians), the more torn up and impassable they become.

@chdot

Kept meeting a youngster this summer. kept saying 'this is unusual' to him. Never cracked a smile.

Did meet a thirty-something lady who exclaimed 'this is brilliant!' as she battered through the vegetation one summer morning.

"400m of urban mountain biking on your commute can't be wrong?"

Do you ever meet/catchup with people?

Over the years. (not regular user) I've met about 4 people - including one with a buggy - just before the section where it would be impossible to pass.

@Greenroofer

It isn't entirely arbitrary. I like the way the trees have curled over the path forming a...green roof. And it was you that informed me of its existence, when I thought I knew all the wrinkles in the south side.

@LivD

The path is quite useable on wide road tyres still. When it pelts it down the dip just before Colinton Road does get a little twitchy, but only for a few days. I prefer it to the moonscape junction of Myreside Road and Colinton Road. 400m of urban mountain biking on your commute can't be wrong?

@IWRATS (& Madame IWRATS) good on you.

@LivD. I concur. I no longer use the route that IWRATS has (somewhat arbitrarily, I feel) named after me because it got so muddy. I did spend one tiring afternoon some years ago walking down with a shovel and putting all the mud over the railway fence, but it soon came back. The path has a good hard surface underneath, but it collects all the leaf slime and water and turns into a gloopy mess in some places.

Last time I used that path (about a ago) it was horribly muddy (inches deep) and almost unusable for bikes. I hope "they" (TPTB) can improve it some time...

Not many bicyclists use it, but I'd just like to announce that the path by the railway down the side of the Watsons sports ground;

https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@55.927063,-3.2265469,17z

has been pruned of its excessive and thorny vegetation. Madame IWRATS and I intervened with garden shears before a fine lunch at the Waiting Room. Enjoy!
