That all might be OTT for the douce readership of Conde Nast (publishers of Vogue) Traveller.
Most likely though, this is simply (largely) down to lazy reliance on a self-selected sample of readers of the publication in question who also have the time and/or motivation to respond (possibly the reason why an obscure - over here -southern US city is in the top 2), as well as reflecting (Conde Nast -reading) visitor numbers (Glasgow's "failure to make the cut" -EEN) .

Add to that no objective measure for "friendliness " - and bingo, chip-wrapper!

The tourists in the photo could easily be Glaswegians.

Having lived in both places Glasgow can be intrusive in its friendliness.

excuse me Mrs, can you tell me how to get to the theatre royal?

Ach son, ah'll jist take ye there, that's easier

Etc

Edinburgh more reserved in its friendliness in a welcoming way according to Conde naste behind only Cork, which I have also been to and found friendly and Asheville North carolina, I have not been there.

Now a similarly surprising thing is that Glasgow might be more vegan friendly than edinburgh. Largely down to the guy from the 13th note venue (where alex kapranos start d).

RJ, perhaps they didn't survey places where the citizens massive inferiority complex compells them to make snide cheap shots dressed up as "the banter"?

Conde Nast had clearly already had tea their tea. Did they even check Glasgow?

"

THE Capital traditionally lags “smiles” behind Glasgow in the friendliness stakes – but not any more.

Tourist bible Conde Nast Traveller has named Edinburgh as the third most welcoming city in the world – while Scotland’s largest metropolis failed to make the cut.
